So the window in England will close on Thursday 9 August 2018 and no player can be bought or sold after that point that is registered with any of the 20 Premier League clubs.
That might change our behaviour a bit in terms of shopping in England. Could also lead to an epic talent dump from the Premier League in the first week of every August.
We clearly want to be able to go up to 31 August or 1 Sept in every summer window until we know what UEFA tournament we will be playing in, if at all.

I don't know why there would be a selling cut off, clubs can sell at any time as it stands.

McDonald splits opinion & he comes across as an arsehole on the pitch who does nothing but moan at folk, but by all accounts he's a nice enough guy off it.
He's unquestionably a Celtic fan though, he said in an interview on Sportsound that he was in the Celtic end at Ibrox for our win there in April 2005

An old boss of mine was also a very good friend of Jackson, a hun but a good guy. He was regularly invited to a pub/restaurant outside the north of the city to have dinner with Jackson and McDonald as three guys was easier to explain away than just a Celtic player and DR hack.
My boss wasn't shy about repeating everything he heard.
The wee judas can ram his protestations up his fat hole.

Seem to recall him falling out with Mowbray, not long after Keith Jackson suddenly conjured up a lot of stories from inside the Celtic dressing room. It was noted, Skippy got punted even before Mowbray did.

McDonald and his family are Celtic fans, and up to then that goal against us was probably the high point of his career (which hadn't gone to plan and resulted in him nearly quitting football.) He had every right to celebrate and "smile" ffs. Some right juvenile pish on this thread.

I quite like listening to McDonald when he's on Radio Scotland. Think he speaks quite well, and I like that I always know who's talking when it's him.

The eff is point in closing the EPL window early as players don't know whether they are 'coming or going' 'going to be tapped up' etc and then still allowing clubs to sell after the deadline?
Players are still going to be unsettled by rival bids from Europe, only now there'll be no means of bringing in replacements.

I don't know if folks on here listen to many football podcasts etc south of the border but I listen to a few and what strikes me is how much of an absolute pasting Arsenal get for the way they are being run etc.
Stark contrast to how one of our big teams are treated by the media, and by far a much more honest way of treating the fans.

Don't see how any CFC fan can be unhappy cos a guy celebrates scoring for his team, after all that's what he's getting paid for. Much as I want CFC to win every game they play, I don't want to win because guys aren't trying against us! By the same token I expect guys to try as hard against other teams as they do against us! What winds up people are wee counts like Paton who kicks everything above the grass against us but plays like a pussy against the various collections of Huns and zombies

Match fixing quickly dealt with.
FAI bans two players following match-fixing investigation
Spoiler: click to toggle Harry West Igors Labuts and Dragos Sfrijan have been banned for a year for offences relating to Athlone Town's meeting with Longford Town in April The Football Association of Ireland (FAI) has suspended two players for a year following a match-fixing investigation relating a second-tier clash in April. Igors Labuts and Dragos Sfrijan have each been banned for 12 months after the Athlone Town pair were found guilty of breaching three FAI rules. Both played in the 3-1 league defeat at Longford Town on April 29 - Sfrijan netting for Athlone - but an investigation was subsequently launched, with the FAI releasing details of the duo's punishment on Thursday. "On May 3, an investigation was launched following a UEFA Betting Fraud Detection System report demonstrated 'clear and overwhelming betting evidence that the course or result of' Athlone Town's game against Longford Town in the SSE Airtricity League First Division on April 29 'was unduly influenced with a view to gaining corrupt betting profits'," a statement read. "Upon receipt of the UEFA BFDS report, the FAI conducted a full investigation which included conducting interviews with relevant personnel, reviewing match footage and obtaining the opinions of football experts - a final report was prepared and charges were issued. "The Independent Disciplinary Committee met on Monday, September 4 and ruled that Athlone Town AFC players Igors Labuts and Dragos Sfrijan were in breach of three FAI rules: - Rule 99: Bringing the Game into Disrepute - Rule 105: Manipulating Matches - Rule 106: Betting / Gambling "Following the Committee's findings both players have been banned from all football-related activities for 12 months. "The FAI has a zero tolerance policy to match-fixing." The Professional Footballers' Association of Ireland (PFAI), who represented Labuts and Sfrijan, expressed "great disappointment and shock" at the result of the disciplinary hearing. The PFAI was also critical of the FAI for the manner in which they handled the situation, indicating that they would appeal the decision and consider taking the case to the Court of Arbitration for Sport if they feel it necessary. "Quite simply, the most serious allegation that can be made against a footballer must be backed up by overwhelming evidence, not half-baked innuendo," a PFAI statement read. Spoiler: click to toggle PFA Ireland statement re Athlone Town investigation We represent Igor Labuts and Dragos Sfrijan who have been found guilty by a disciplinary panel hand picked by the FAI of breaching three FAI rules, Rule 99: Bringing the Game into Disrepute, Rule 105: Manipulating Matches and Rule 106: Betting/Gambling. It was with great disappointment and shock that such a result has occurred from what was a most serious charge with such flimsy evidence.
To be completely clear, this association and these players find the concept of match manipulation and anything that affects the integrity of this sport completely unacceptable and we believe it should be met with harsh punishment where it is proven with appropriate evidence. This is not such a case. In fact no evidence exists that these players were guilty of any such offence. They cooperated fully with the investigation and provided all phone records and any bank accounts that they had to the FAI. None of these records were used at the hearing and no suggestion has been made that they indicated any untoward behaviour. Instead, the FAI arbitrarily convened a three man panel to study the footage in conjunction with evidence of irregular betting patterns. No rule exists for such a panel but it was nonetheless asked to determine if these players performed in an adequate or illogical manner. Of these three, only two reached an opinion that they had while a third, though expressing reservations, said he felt there was not enough evidence. At the hearing, one of these experts did not appear and his opinion was withdrawn while another, who had expressed reservations, changed his view. A further expert was introduced, a sports consultant from Austria, who had never seen a League of Ireland match before and he refused to say whether he felt the actions of the player in question was deliberate or not.
The players engaged four experts, including three of Ireland's best known broadcasting pundits and another leading coach, all of whom expressed the opinion that there was not enough evidence to find the players guilty of match manipulation and that the errors in the match were typical of that standard of football. The decision of the disciplinary panel makes no reference to the substantial expert evidence which contradicts the finding and ignores the fact that in 93.7% of all cases reported by the BFDS betting monitor where irregular betting patterns exist, no sanctions were administered.
Quite simply, the most serious allegation that can be made against a footballer must be backed up by overwhelming evidence, not half-baked innuendo. No player in the history of sport has been found guilty of match fixing on such little evidence. All of the comparative jurisprudence in Europe demonstrates a requirement for substantial proof in the face of such allegations. This case is an outlier.
There is an obligation on sports authorities to treat players with fairness and not seek to scapegoat them in order to gain cheap wins in what is a serious global problem. Players must be protected against injustice by ensuring that proper procedures, fairness and natural justice applies in all matters of this nature. Although both have received a year long ban, the effect of such a finding is of a lifetime ban as the stain of this allegation is career ending. The damage already done to these players is irreversible but they will fight to reclaim what is left of their good names. We will appeal this decision and will take this as far as the Court of Arbitration for Sport if necessary.

Anyone see that winker Gordon Parks latest rant, 'Even Henrik left Celtic to hit true heights'
A laughably transparent attempt to be thought of as some kind of contrarian journo, what a halfwit.
Spoiler: click to toggle Devil’s advocate makes a case for Henrik Larsson having had seven misspent seasons at Celtic, says Gordon Parks.
It’s a controversial standpoint but, on balance, it’s fair comment to say his talent deserved a greater stage in his prime.
True professional respect only came his way after his best days were behind him.
Only in the twilight years at Barcelona did the Swede achieve true greatness and general acceptance as a superstar of the game – despite having long since achieved God-like status in Glasgow.
Two La Liga titles and a Champions League winner’s medal were the real crowning glory for the King of Kings (below).
He was a fabulous player, one of the best. But the fact remains his 242 goals at Parkhead only bring into clear focus just what might have been had he opted against a move to the Hoops from Feyenoord and taken a path to England’s top flight or another part of the continent.
Did he handicap his credibility by operating in the somewhat less salubrious climate of Scottish football?
It’s nothing personal and the devil has a point but to actually argue the toss these days is akin to opening the gates of social media hell.
Some keyboard warriors took exception to my suggestion in last week’s column that Patrick Roberts had shown a lack of ambition by rejoining Celtic.
The young Englishman opted against testing himself with a greater challenge by easing himself back into a comfort zone and it’s started already with a predictable second-gear cruise against the mighty Hamilton.
Just the beginning of another season of pageantry for the Man City kid en route to picking up another Premiership winner’s medal.
Football is a sport. One of its many facets is to sit on one side of the fence of debates on a whole range of subjects surrounding it – it’s part of the fun. But the climate surrounding our national game is all rage, conspiracy theories, preoccupation with all things political and disguised sectarian agendas.
Opinions are like belly buttons – everyone has one but some bellies rumble louder than others.
If social media is a window on Scottish football’s soul then it’s clear many supporters have lost their sense of humour, too eager to look for agendas that don’t exist and desperate to find a cause for which to take offence to.
So, deep breath all round, here goes nothing … Henrik stayed for far too long and Paddy’s already overstayed his welcome.
We may have to agree to disagree but surely we all have the right to an opinion. Feel free to discuss …
