Is it possible to talk about teams in the lower divisions without adding the caveat, "No disrespect to..." before their names?
Of course it is, I have an enormous amount of disrespect towards Sevco for example.

Players and managers should just be brutally honest.

"With the greatest disrespect to [insert wee diddy club name] they're pish. They're a bunch of [insert 'classic' part-time footballer occupations - postie, being a particular favourite] and we should be gubbing them 8-0"

Oh absolutely, but you've got to remember that football has that unique rule against "bringing the game into disrepute". Sadly, referring to your opponents as good for nothing pig shaggers (or similar) would probably fall foul of that rule.

England made a Le Coq of it with Le Tiss, even the bigger footballing nations like Germany, Italy, Spain and France (whom I believe he was eligible for, though perhaps it is Le Saux I'm thinking on :ponder: ) would have given him a fairer run - scored a hat trick in the Last B game before 98 and they took Neon Dion instead (now there's a Cult Hero, hard as nails).

This story been on here yet?

According to one of football's most endearing fairytales, Harry Redknapp once pulled an abusive fan from the crowd and put him on the field for West Ham. This allegedly happened in 1994, but no video and scant evidence of the incident exist. Jeff Maysh chased this mystery for over a decade before finally catching up with the fan in question

Put your feet where your mouth is, so he did
Worth a read.

Steve says he wheeled away in celebration, arms extended, head bent with disbelief. On the side of the field, Redknapp turned around and looked briefly to the heavens.

"It was like time stopped still – it was the greatest moment of my life," says Steve. Somewhere in the crowd, Bazza and Chunk were losing their minds. Steve Davies had scored on his West Ham debut.

"After that, I was exhausted. I was on 30 cigarettes a day back then,"

Makes Stokes look like a puppy. Best line: "I'd already got the impression that Barcelona was a little like being back at Ajax, it was like being back at school. None of the lads acted like superstars, which was strange. Messi, Xavi, Iniesta, the whole gang – they were like schoolboys. The best footballers in the world stood there with their heads bowed, and I didn't understand any of it. It was ridiculous.
Everyone did as they were told. I didn't fit in, not at all. I thought, just enjoy the opportunity, don't confirm their prejudices. So I started to adapt and blend in. I became way too nice. It was mental. I said what I thought people wanted me to say. It was completely messed up. I drove the club's Audi and stood there and nodded my head. I hardly even yelled at my team-mates any more. I was boring. Zlatan was no longer Zlatan."
