Some changes to the way football is currently played being considered apparently......some seem based on common sens (ie only the captain of teams being allowed to question a refs decision ala rugby), others seem a bit mental such as being able to take a free-kick and pass to yourself!

The 30 minute halves are interesting but could possibly cause some of Celtic's Irish fans to miss their boat home

yeah that could be interesting as it is supposed to stop time wasting which is a good thing, however what it won't stop is players feigning injury anyway, ok the clock may be stopped whilst he writhes on the floor in apparent agony, but fake injuries aren't only about wasting time there are also done to break the momentum one team has!

A lot of good ideas in there, and a couple of odd ones.

Good
  • two periods of 30 minutes with the clock stopped whenever the ball goes out of play
  • be stricter on the rule which allows keepers to hold the ball for six seconds
  • be more stringent when calculating additional time
  • changing the order of kick-taking in penalty shoot-outs, known as 'ABBA'
  • players who are being substituted leaving at the closest part of the touchline to them instead of at the halfway line
  • passing to yourself at a free-kick, corner and goal-kick
  • a stadium clock which stops and starts along with the referee's watch
  • a goal-kick being taken on the same side that the ball went out on (thought that was a rule already?)
  • a "clearer and more consistent definition" of handball
  • a player who stops a goal with his hands gets a red card (thought that was a rule already?)
  • referees can only blow for half-time or full-time when the ball goes out of play
Bad
  • only allowing captains to speak to referees
  • a player who scores a goal with his hands gets a red card
  • a keeper who handles a backpass or throw-in from a team-mate concedes a penalty
  • the referee can award a goal if a player stops a goal being scored by handling on or close to the goal-line
  • a penalty kick is either scored or missed/saved and players cannot follow up to score to stop encroachment into the penalty area
  • allowing the goal-kick to be taken even if the ball is moving

Presumably the clock stops when the ball goes out of play. No reason to.timewaste.

Surely most of these rules existed? ( when not playing the Celtic)

The ball boys will need to be on their game.

The longer they take to get the ball in play the longer the game goes on.

At the moment we get picked up after the game and we can give a time to be there. It will be more difficult with this system.
If it stops time wasting great but a lot of teams don't put the ball out of play to waste time, you are just giving your opponent the ball, the majority of time wasting is in players feigning injury or goal celebrations and getting back to your own half.

If play is stopped for injuries the clock would stop. Likewise between the whistle being blown for a goal and being blown for a restart it would stop. They use this in AFL in Australia and it works really well.

Would also mean the effers couldn't just blow the whistle at ninety because we are two nil up nor could they let the game run on and on if we were drawing or just ahead by one goal.

Two 30 min halves sounds horrendous. The game will be geared towards running a clock down if your winning. So if your being Hunnish, instead of rolling about on the floor you'd be taking the ball into corners or not trying to go forward.

30 min halves won't deal with time wasting, it will just develop. Why not just stamp out time wasting, rolling about on the floor, by dealing with the players and creating an environment where it's not ok to do so.

Occasional Substitute
[ * * * * ]
The day football has to take any ideas from rugby is the day we all might as well pack it in.

The only rule changes I'd like to see are in fact existing rules which are not enforced - defenders who make no attempt to play the ball when shuffling it out should be penalised for infringement, and handball only given if the player actually intended to handle the ball. I also think that reckless play by goalkeepers should be penalised in the same way as it would be for an outfield player (for example, Craig Gordon at Pittodrie should have conceded a penalty regardless of whether or not "the ball was away".)

I suppose the penalty shootout idea is fair enough.

Don't know. Winning a 12th European Cup isn't a bad month.

Dunno, I kinda like that idea. I'm not a fan of teams crowding the ref trying to get him to make a decision.

Every single one of Jorge Mendes' Madrid based clients have been, or are under investigation for effing the tax man.

Ricardo Carvalho, Radamel Falcao, Fábio Coentrão, Ángel Di María, Cristiano Ronaldo and now José Mourinho completes the set. Purely coincidental, I'm sure.

Unsure if De Gea, James Rodriguez and Diego Costa were with him in Spain, but I'd certainly be cutting ties pronto.
