Steve Nicol has a book (Five league titles and a packet of crisps) coming out, nice wee interview with him. He has played in some memorable games; Hillsborough, Heysel and with Scotland when Jock Stein died.
He touches on them in this interview but may go into more detail in his book.

He's on the tv a lot over here in the States , really enjoy his take on things. Especially compared to his fellow Scottish commentator Craig Burley

Burley is an absolute fud though, he seems to resent present day footballers and the money they earn, and loves a dig at us especially,

The egg chasers have the right idea. It's a pity that those in charge of football can't have the same idea.

I've long thought that harsh sanctions in football would cure the disease of cheating - because cheating is exactly what it is.

The 'simulator' should be sent off. No first yellow, just a straight red card.

Ban the cheat for 3, 4, 6, or however many games the fitba high heidyins decide.

For example, Real Madrid having to do without Ronaldo, or Barcelona without Suarez for an extended period would lead to the clubs themselves making the player stop.

Yes, there might be a short period where some games might end up 7-a-side, but it'd be worth it in the long run.

A bit harsh on the punishments there

I agree refs should take more action against divers, but they must have doubts about whether there's contact in some cases. They might need video evidence so that the players are undeniably guilty

There doesn't have to be contact in cases of obstruction, still a foul cutting across a player forcing him to deviate without the defender playing or making contact with the ball. Those instances are difficult for referees to deal with and we see them getting it wrong quite often.

I second that. It is supposed to be a contact sport. Also hate the "he took one for the team" and "good foul to make" bollocks.

Poor choice of words on my part - I was just meaning that the ref might be unsure about whether there's been an offence committed. Even after video replays it can be hard to judge so trying to view it in real time with no replays is difficult. I think that we sometimes forget that pundits and ourselves judge incidents after seeing it for the 5th time from 3 angles in slow motion and refs don't benefit from that so they're doing well to get a majority of decisions correct.

We should expect referees' decisions to be of a lower quality than ours in these circumstances. But they still do have enough info to hand to be harsher on divers.

I like the new rule that if a player needs subbed due to foul play, it doesnt count as one of the allocation of substitutions.

It would be good to see that adopted by football.

Thing is, not quite sure how you enforce that.

A possible way around it is if one player injures another, the other team lose that player for the duration the player is injured. If they are subbed, then that sub is 'free'.

Would work right up to the moment Pepe is "assualted" by Messi and needs twenty minutes of treatment.

Just catching up on this thread after a couple days but a pet peeve of mine is using subs in the last 5 mins or during a long 5-6 period of stoppage time for no other reason than to waste time, cant think of a way round it apart from a time limit between substitions and no subs allowed in injury time, probably unworkable though
