Stumbled upon a European club version of the ELO football ranking system.

If you're into your stats porn, it's marvelous.

Here's the top 16 teams in the world.

And here's us. We're almost back at 1994 levels.

I find the manager pages fascinating.

Wee football trivia question: if Sunderland did it in 1979, and Villa did it in 1981, who did it in 1980?

You have to wonder what sort of system has Dalglish/Keegan/Pulis/etc better than Jock Stein.

Looks like it's working out "before and after". Pulis has never hung around long enough to be at a club who's ratings are falling back to the level they were when he started. I'd imagine that most modern managers will have a start on old-fashioned, legacy, managers. And the ranking clearly favour gradual increases over "boom and bust" trophies, even when those trophies are as life-changing as the ones Jock won.
http://clubelo.com/TonyPulis
http://clubelo.com/JockStein

I'm not claiming it's "accurate" in any way, but it's a very interesting way to visualise European football's pulse.

Here's remarkable parallels bewteen 1982-1994 Celtic, and 2003-2016 Celtic.

I suppose for the statto it is a great resource, but as a means of determining 'best' or historical trends, I can't believe it proves anything useful. Subjectivity may deem trophies to be more successful than a mean performance level at less successful club during a relatively 'up' period.

Also, they can't predict future trends.

It reminds me of that old Google comparison of disparate charts of things like 'Fatal gunshots in the US' v 'People with green eyes in Haiti' and get remarkably similar lines.

Really? You think that there is not a single thing useful in this?

I couldn't have drawn the decline in Scottish football better myself.

Henning Berg, despite not being a great manager, is best playing against Ronny Deila's teams (bottom chart).

While I'm not going to watch a graph on a weekend with a scarf and pint in my hand, I think that there is definitely some use.

It was fecking hilarious, anyone remember it? If so, could you repost, please?

Don't get me wrong, I enjoy graphs which may point at something as much as anyone else and from a historical point of view, it does show the decline and/or rise of people/clubs/countries, and those who can see trends in the figures may find it fascinating, but it doesn't show me anything that gives any real weight to the future.

If you go by trends, then you could be swayed by a graph on the way up, but I feel that managers or coaches are basically dealt a good or bad hand with the squads they inherit or are able to assemble, and the best of them take advantage of their good fortune. The rest may have a season or two giving the impression of progress, but most ultimately fail to improve.

Look at Mourinho at the moment. Will he get another decent chance? Even the best turn to shampoo temporarily, until they get a lucky gig again.
http://clubelo.com/louisvangaal - how would anyone employ him under any circumstances?
http://clubelo.com/arsenewenger - what does this tell us about him?

I didn't need the graphs to see that Scottish football is in decline, nor that there are some coaches who my be worth seeking out, so to have that info is handy as a sort of confirmation for your instinct as to the efficacy of a future Celtic coach!

The progress of clubs who get mega investment over a period is going to be interesting, but we don't need a graph to predict how most will progress (if they're successful!).

Just watching Hoops victory v Barca again and that pumpkin Provan is negative every Celtic move; every Barca move is amazing. Hun pumpkin. I loved him as a player - first cup final was 85 and his free kick but ffs he's a carrot - I'd say uncle tom but we know he's a hun. Mega disappointed.

Agree. Listen to the noise he makes when Samaras wins the penalty on Sammy two-goal-extravaganza Sunday. GUTTED. Although he did say Sutton was onside for his first in the 6-2 game. Maybe he's just thick.
