Would this have been a good thing? Wonder how the city of Dundee would have took it, what would happen to all those pro-footballers now without a club?

Dundee and Dundee United were DAYS away from merging in 1999, says former SPL chief Roger Mitchell
SCOTT MCDERMOTT

THE clubs were three days away from becoming one in 1999 according to former SPL boss Roger Mitchell.

FORMER SPL chief Roger Mitchell has revealed that a merger between Dundee and Dundee United clubs was just DAYS away back in 1999.

Mitchell, who was in charge of the league for four years, insists a deal was DONE between both clubs before the plug was pulled 72 hours later.

He made the astonishing claim on Twitter and says a badge and kit for the new, amalgamated side had even been submitted to the SPL for approval.

The move, which was mooted by Dundee owner Peter Marr 17 years ago while the Dark Blues were in financial trouble, faced opposition from fans at both Dens Park and Tannadice.

Legendary United boss Jim McLean was vehemently against the idea of merging or ground sharing with their street neighbours.

The notion of just one city club in Dundee has reared its head at various times in the last 20 years. But according to Mitchell, it was very close to reality in 1999.

He tweeted yesterday: “It wasn’t just mooted, it was done and dusted on the Friday then off on the Monday.

“He had registered the name and the strips with us, as he had to. It was done.”

I do remember this, they were both supposed to be selling their stadiums to property developers and moving to a new-build stadium at the athletics stadium at Caird Park, not far from Dens and Tannadice.
I'm sure when Angus Cook was in charge at Dundee he also tried to sell the idea of "Dundee City" in the early late 80s/early 90s, was asked to sign a petition against it by United fans before a game at Tannadice, like all the other people around, I laughed and walked on...
They were also going to demolish Dens and Tannadice and build a new stadium for Scotland's joint European Championship bit with Ireland. Obviously that didn't take off either.
Yes remember that too, they had ditched the idea of amalgamating the clubs and decided to share a stadium, but again, never happened, just like the joint Euro bid...

In all honesty I think it would have been best if the Dundee clubs merged. Better to have a one team city with a lot of fans that would have a decent rivalry with someone like Aberdeen than what the current situation is.

That's obviously the opinion of someone who isn't that emotionally invested in either club.

At the very least, it surely makes sense to share a stadium. Especially when you have two across the road from each other :cuckoo:

Lukasz Zaluska signed for Darmstadt in the Bundesliga. And, once again, he's sat on the bench, playing absolutely no football at all.

Almost an entire career spent sitting on the bench. What a lucky bastard
