I see Messi gets off lightly again, this time, booked for a throat grab and headbutt (of sorts).

I wish the big Roma bloke had knocked out the petulant wee fud.
 :there:
A good boot up the arse is needed

On a serious note, i love this. Any of our boys involved?

I should have been there this weekend but the mrs kyboshed the idea

Did go to Barga last month though, and briefly met BusaBhoy in the famous PaoloGas Bar.

Our very own Boretim is there and is the president of the Italian Celts (I took part in the football tournament in Milan in June and had a great day with a great bunch of guys, I even put a thread up here of it with lots of photos), and this afternoon he was presenting his collection of The Celtic View dating back from the 80's to the Library of Barga.

I met around 20 of the guys in June and honestly some of them could put anyone of us to shame with their knowledge of Celtic, it is great and strange at the same time to see so many Celtic Italian fans who have a real and genuine passion for our club.

It is an added bonus that Barga is such a beautiful town, and I will definitely be heading back there, hopefully for the next time such a meeting is held!

EDIT: To say, I thought I recognised you Busa, if I'm not mistaken you are in front of Spago (or Spaghetti Hoops )

The Hertha Berlin team bus on its way to pick up the players was attacked yesterday by a man on a motorcykel, first he made made angry gestures towards the bus and then drew a pistol before firing a shoot that went through the frontwindow of the bus

It seems strange that EPL teams haven't tried any link ups with SPL teams, not counting Man City and Celtic's love in.

You would think that it would make sense for some of the top end EPL sides to try some sort of link up that could benefit both the quality of the Scottish game and increase the value of players in our market.

Realistically the SPL is a feeder league in Europe, but if richer EPL clubs could give 1 or 2 decent youngsters to an SPL team each year it would increase the overall quality of the domestic game, and possibly inflate transfer fees across the board as there would be more interest.

It could be a mutually Beneficial in a lot of ways, and if it could be seen as a respectful partnership rather than some sort of milking exercise for the EPL then I'd like to see more of it.

Financially it would make sense if each SPL team was aided with a wee bit of cash, a couple of decent youngsters and some coaching support for the club. With the mad money of the EPL clubs, they could easily add a lot of value to the game in Scotland and create a stronger pool of players across the league.

Anyone else think something like this could work, or would it be sacrilege to accept help from English Football?

Former Celtic star Tony Watt was dropped for Saturday’s match between Charlton and QPR after a ‘training ground incident’, according to his manager Guy Luzon.

Watt was expected to start for The Addicks in their first match of the new season at home to one of the division’s favourites but the forward had to make-do with a place on the bench.

The former Hoops hit-man ended up making the difference, however, scoring one and setting up the other in a 2-0 win.

But Luzon revealed after the game that Scotland Under-21 striker’s absence from the starting line-up was nothing to do with his ability, admitting there had been a training ground issue.

He told London 24:

Tony changed the game, he shows so much quality.

It is between me and him, that is why he didn’t start the game.

Discipline, yeah. He accepts it because he doesn’t have any choice, it is the coach’s choice and he accepted it.

There is no doubt about his quality. He will be good this season.

Squad sizes.

Is football really that much more physical and tiring that clubs need 25-30 first team players? As recently as the late 80s you can see examples of teams playing a full season with bout 15 first team players. Euro qualifiers have bumped the number of games we play a season recently, but most other clubs are still on around 40-50 games.

Using us as an example...

We played 50 games in 1984-85. Again can't find the stats online but based on my knowledge of this era I'd estimate 15-20 players used.
We played 48 games in 1994-95. Can't find the stats online but I'm guessing by the stats for 95-96 that we'd have used around 20 players.
We played 49 games in 2004-05. 31 players in matchday squads.
We played 61 games in 2014-15. 39 players in matchday squads.

While we do have the unusual scenario of having six extra European games to contend with most SPL sides will only play 40-45 games. English lower league sides will rarely top 50 depending on their Cup runs, an average EPL side will have around 40-45 games. It is only a handful of clubs who are pushing the 60 game barrier compared to the 45-50 odd games played in the '80s.

Obviously no club now can go back as they have to keep up with everyone else, my thought is 'Is there actually a need for having around 35 players in your squad or could clubs feasibly go through a season with 20-22 players?'.

This is the thing, is 90 minutes of football 40-50 times a season really that much more physically demanding that clubs have to have three times as many players to be able to complete a season?

I don't think the actual game itself has changed that significantly, and players are generally believed to be even fitter today than they ever were. When you look at some of the chaff in the EPL squads you start to wonder if it is just fear of being told your squad is too small that makes managers buy more players and carry around passengers in their squads.

It could be great for a lot of clubs in Scotland.

What's the benefit for the EPL teams? Apart from us, in terms of player development, I couldn't see any EPL club wanting to send young players to any other team in Scotland. Is the other main benefit not that the EPL clubs can send players elsewhere if they can't get a work permit?

I think it's about competitiveness rather than anything else. Most fit players could handle two games per week for the season, however fatigue would take a toll and they'd end up performing at probably 70-80% of their capability. Rotating, and big squads allows players to remain fresher.

It's all about margins. If you have a small squad that's played a lot of games and their performance level will inevitably drop. That's fine if your rivals performance levels similarly suffer, however if they don't, the smaller squad will be a disadvantage. Couple that with the increased risk of injuries etc.

I always laugh when players get criticised for not being able to play two games a week. I don't believe that it's that they can't, it's that they can't at a high level
