St Mirren captain Steven Thompson says he is "mortified" after injuring team-mate John McGinn with a spiked pole in a training ground prank.
Thompson threw the pole at McGinn which pierced his thigh and resulted in the 20-year-old missing Saturday's win over Kilmarnock in the Scottish Premiership.

The Scotland Under-21 midfielder is expected to be out for a further three weeks with the injury.

"I'm mortified by the whole thing," said Thompson. "It was a daft prank." Speaking to the Scottish Sun, the 36-year-old added: "I threw it for a laugh, stupid me trying to be funny, and unfortunately it's anything but. It's a total disaster."

St Mirren refused to comment when contacted by the BBC and said they would be dealing with the matter internally.

The incident took place last Thursday at the Ralston Training Complex after McGinn robbed Thompson of possession during a dribbling routine.

Thompson said the pole went a centimetre into McGinn's leg and has torn the muscle, but not caused any long-term damage.

The striker added: "I've been shocked by it, to be honest, really down about it. I like a laugh and a joke in training, but for something like this to happen is just unbelievable."

Unbelievable that, I mean you throw a 'spear' at someone and it embeds in their leg and injures them. To be fair, nobody could have predicted that.

Good job it was just a joke, and not an act of petulant aggression at being dispossessed by a young lad. A young lad who just happens to be the grandson of a former Celtic chairman. Just a joke, bit of banter...

Who did Thompson play for again? :ponder:

Well, had he played for Celtic, the headline would have started with "ex Celtic star"...

I have a strange question, though not a story, which I do not know where to put, so it should fit right in:

I bought a Burnley baby kit for my best mates' kid. (Celtic did not have baby kits, just kids, and he sympathises with Burnley.) On the front of the shirt instead of a sponsor it says BFC 82, and then there's a lion rampant, a bee and something that looks to me like it has to be The Red Hand of Ulster. WTF is this? Does anybody know?

Just seen an article on the BBC about Algeria's title race. The title no one wants to win it seems.

Without having read anything further about it, I like that decision. Conserve local clubs ability to recruit the biggest talents in their own country. Think letting Barca and others have academies would detrimental to national clubs both in sporting terms and financially. E.g. it would restrict the possibility to sell players to bigger clubs later in their career.

On a subjective note, I wouldn't like it if Barca set up an academy in Scotland.

There's pros and cons to it, having a club like Barcelona train up domestic youngsters could only benefit said country's national team however it would undoubtedly have a detrimental effect on the quality of player within the domestic game.

In general I agree with the Dane's telling Barca to GTF as long as they have their own plans to open their own youth academies.

A must read.

George Dowell dreamed of playing professional football before a car crash left him paralysed from the chest down and changed his life forever.

However, Dowell who used to play for Worthing FC now has a different dream - guiding the club to Conference South.

The former defender, 22, has bought the club he used to play for after using compensation from his accident to help the financially-troubled side.

Jordi Gomez, the Sunderland midfielder, is constantly referred to by his full name, 'Jordi Gomez' by commentators, even foriegn ones.
I remember watching a Wigan game in a Polish hotel room in 2009 and the commentators were calling him 'Jordi Gomez'. It's the same tonight on Match of the Day. Never 'Gomez', always 'Jordi Gomez'. Fecking strange.

One year since Tito passed on :(
I think I read that the number 1training pitch at the club has been named after him so that every player from the youths up will always know about his contribution.

Another way to pick on fans or a benefit for other fans?

Football fans to be breathalysed in new scheme

FOOTBALL fans face being breathalysed before entering stadiums across the country to stop drunken behaviour at matches.

Cambridge United will roll out the initiative at their home game against Burton Albion today.

Stewards at Cambridge's Abbey Stadium will be presented with breathalyser devices called AlcoBlows to test fans as they enter the ground.

Anyone who looks to be drunk will be asked to blow into the device.

If they are found to be twice the legal drink drive limit, they will be refused admission.

If the scheme is a success then it could become a regular feature at bigger grounds in the Premier League.
