What should they offer us?

Currently ninth in the Championship and within reach of a promotion play-off spot, Middlesbrough have already begun looking ahead to selling tickets for next season. You might think a strong finish would be all the incentive they need to offer potential ticket buyers, but just in case that doesn't work out, they've come up with a new idea to help entice supporters: a free drink at every home match for all season card holders.

From the Evening Gazette:

Adult and over-65 season card holders for 2013/14 will be entitled to a free drink at every game and the offer includes beer, lager, wine, soft drinks and hot drinks.

The club have been keen to reward season card holders for their continued support and hope fans feel the gesture goes some way to making them feel appreciated.

The picture paints a different story.

I did not know what it meant! Young Greek ace in race storm after celebrating goal with 'Nazi salute'
.
AEK Athens midfielder Giorgos Katidis has denied giving a Nazi salute after scoring the winner in Saturday's 2-1 Greek Super League victory over Veria.

The 20-year-old midfielder was seen gesturing to the crowd with his right arm extended and hand straightened in front of his astonished Brazilian-born teammate, Roger Guerreiro.

The former Greece Under-19 captain was heavily criticised by fans on Twitter and Facebook following the incident at the Olympic Stadium.

'I am not a fascist and would not have done it if I had known what it meant,' Katidis replied on his Twitter account.

Katidis could face punishment from his club or the Super League although AEK's German coach Ewald Lienen leapt to his defence.

'He is a young kid who does not have any political ideas. He most likely saw such a salute on the Internet or somewhere else and did it without knowing what it means,' he said.

'I am 100 per cent sure Giorgos did not know what he did. He was crying in the dressing room seeing the reaction.'

There's an interesting situation in Portugal: Both Benfica, who lead the table, and Porto, who are second, are unbeaten after 23 games.

Astonishingly, Porto have now lost only one league game in the last three seasons (including this one).

Seems Portugal's three-team "monopoly" may be broken, though, as Sporting continue to be in turmoil. Their board has resigned, they are in tenth position and it is over a decade since their last championship.

By contrast, there is a terrific campaign in the Eredivisie this season, with Ajax, PSV, Feyenoord and Vitesse all in with a shout. But for competitiveness, look no further than Sweden's Alsvensken, which has six winners over the last six years (including Malmö who took a couple of notable European scalps as well as beating Sevco).

Times Football Editor Tony Evans wrote the following piece, published under the headline 'When we are wrong, we will hold our hands up. It's the right thing to do'.
There are times when all you can do is admit you were wrong. Last week, Times football ran a story that we thought was a blockbuster. The state of Qatar was proposing a new summer tournament that would offer stunning financial rewards to the teams who participated.
It was a horrible prospect that threatened to transform the sport but appeared to be a brilliant story. The Dream Football League (DFL) would turn into a journalistic nightmare.
