Wonder if we could see this outfield this season (3-5-2)?

… Hendry (22) … Simunovic (23)… Ajer (19) ……

………….Kouassi (20) … Ntcham (21)…………

… Roberts (20) … Musonda (21) … Tierney (20)

………. Dembele (21) … Edouard (20) ……..
Why would we play the best left back in the country and one of the best in Britain at left wing?

Mediocre window at best.

Compper - I like the idea but I'm not sure I like him as the actual. Obviously haven't seen him play for us yet.

Morgan - who knows? A project playing at a low level. We won't even see him till next season at least.

Hendry - another project. Not good enough for our first team at present.

Bain - emergency on loan signing who will probably play one game max. This leaves the worrying prospect of De Vries as our number one through the big games. Gordon was unchallenged by De Vries. A big drop in standard (and I'm no fan of Gordon).

Musonda - potentially a great signing. A bums on seat signing. Hopefully not playing as winger though. It was a 10 we needed and I hope that's where we see him. He looks the part though.

Outs

Didn't really do much on the deadwood. As usual, best we can cobble together are loans (bar Henderson).

Haven't strengthened at goalkeeper, right back or centre half. Given they are our main weak spots this is worrying. Don't see much hope of progressing in Europe. We need to strengthen defence for qualifiers in Summer. Again, we will potentially be bedding guys in or going with what we have.
We could maybe loan Morgan to Aberdeen next season when Christie returns.
I'm not convinced Christie will make it with us.
Me neither, I'd sell this summer if we trebled our money on him.

I think - despite most of us agreeing otherwise - we can give up on the goalie position for another year. If Gordon recovers, he's the no1 for the forseeable.

Looks like it.
I had hoped we would replace CG this season, in Europe, a good keeper should be an absolute priority for us and I would be happy for us to spend to get one.

Hardly. Five in, five out. One huge talent, one experienced centre half, and two Scottish born players that everyone in the game has been raving about.

We'll do more in the summer as well. Maybe Edouard on a permanent deal, plus a right back.

Life is good.

I was just trying to be funny :(

With a back 3 you play with wing backs as KT did on midweek.

Football’s top teams are moving towards 3-5-2 (or 3-4-3 variation), so traditional FBs are now wing backs - perfect for KT as he motors up and down the left hand side plus he can also drop in the back line to form a 4 if needed

I sat opposite the back 3 during 1st half midweek and this is exactly what happened. KT spent most of his time around the half way line and made several incisive runs with telling crosses. Forrst covered back on the right when needed.

This is the way we will play more and more especially domestically. Also allows us to play 2 up front.

We played a RB and RW with a LWB on the other side, worked well but I thought the forwards needed to come wider more often to help KT. It definitely let KT have a bit more space, it'll be interesting to see where we find a place for Musonda.

Tierney is great at running past folk using pace and power but he lacks the skill and ability to beat a mean of an out and out winger. In your system I think it's more likely he'd drop back and whoever was playing up with Dembele would occupy that inside forward position on the left.

Considering retirement
[ * * * * * * * * * * * ]
Zenit will be seen as some sort of acid test, not only for what's taken place during the window, but also where this squad currently stands.

I am happy we have retained Dembele and Simunovic, with both actually fit (for now) and looking like they might get back to something resembling last year's form.

Compper makes sense as a signing. We wanted Jagielka as this year's Toure, we've got this guy now. His injury is unfortunate, but it can happen. I am not sure the strategy should be so short term that we should not have considered it just because he can't play in the Europa League. It is significant that he is left sided.

Musonda is not someone anyone can argue with. It's amazes me that he was acquired for such a low loan fee and significant that he will be here for a full pre season. There is a genuinely different, and potentially top class option at 10 now.

Rodgers has already said we could see Gordon return before that 12 week period. So the minimal outlay on Bain is better than launching £750,000 and a three and a half year deal on a third (soon to be fourth) choice keeper who was picked up for £10,000 in the summer.

The other signings are not for this season, and I am fine with that. I'm fine with trying to develop good young Scottish players to potentially become the mainstays of future Celtic teams, not unlike Brown and Forrest (who obviously wasn't bought, but still). I was fine with Christie, who if nothing else has got much more experience now, and who's value has only increased as one of our players.

You look at the competition for places in our squad when we get players back from injury and it is basically as healthy as it has been for a long, long time. That's still something people find things to moan about (RB, GK, CD), but can't surely be in any doubt.

The Zenit tie could make a fool of all this, and usher in a whole lot of 'told ya so' chat. But with what we have done in this window, we have basically moved the needle a bit towards the summer, where you could pick a starting XI right now to have a major tilt at the first couple of qualifiers and be cnfident of it, even if two or three end up moving on.

Identifying good young players and developing them, is our only chance of good players now.. Unless we loan them,if we loan them, then an 18 month deal is probably the best we could do on 1 contract.

With that in mind, as much as we don't like it, its been a fairly good window. Especially as the manager wants a core of Scots.

Powderpuff window.

Much needed experience brought in at centre-back (arguably our weakest position) but by all accounts, a journeyman type.
Let's hope he has a late flowering purple-patch :twitch:

Two more projects signed from Scotchland :suspect: but at least the manager has some pedigree in bringing through youngsters....

A raz-a-mat-az-unproven player.
There's an oxymoron for ye!
Seems to be the creative type, though, so let's hope he goes on to pull up a few trees :)

Goalie was injured late in the window, but given he already has one dodgy knee, the fact that it's his other wan that's goosed this time, hardly fills me with hope for the future.
Let's all hope Big Doris doesnae see a ghost and take fright before a big game, or we just might see Roy Bain starring for us, between the sticks.

5.5/10 must do better

Whilst this line up was ostensibly to highlight the strength of a very young team, Brendan will be coaching them every day ay Lennoxtown on flexible formations.

Some players are primarily wingers / wide men, some are full backs in the traditional sense, If a team is very lucky, they have players that can combine the 2.

If you watch e.g. our 4-2-3-1, the wide men play narrow, around the 18 yard line box to box which creates the channel wide on each wing. This is where KT excels and he doesn’t have to beat a man, just get a half yard of space for the cross or drive to the goal line. Did ok at that midweek.

Most teams balance the midfield 5 with a natural "winger" on one side and a natural "FB" on the other.

The different formations and tactics for each situation with the players you have are why managers can earn the big bucks too.

Sinclair didn’t play the first half midweek when we put in out best 45 mins of the season.

Horses for courses which is why the management team identify and bring in players to suit all scenarios

No No!!!!!! You can''t say that Brendan. You've got to hint and make facial expressions that you wanted to spend every penny that the club has in the bank and you were denied, denied and denied over and over again from getting your way and if it continues you will leave the club - so there.

Has no one shown him the script?
