Anyone have a Times subscription? There's an article today called: "Celtic have a rich history — you can't buy soul" I'd quite like to read. Cheers Edited by The Notorious Larry Duff, 22 Nov 2017, 01:53 PM.

Think it might be a quote from Rodgers at his press conference. Seen a wee bit on twitter “We will never be able to do what PSG are doing in terms of finance. That is why people will think it is wrong in football. Celtic have something a lot of clubs don’t have – a rich history, a support and a fanbase a lot of clubs don’t have.” |

By the summer of 1970 Celtic had played 48 games in Europe, won the European Cup once and reached a second final. Until August of that year Paris Saint-Germain did not exist. It would be unfair to label the French as slow starters given that they are their country’s most decorated outfit and the only one to have won a major European trophy. But, at just 47, they are still in their infancy in football terms and their status as a global superpower is younger still. In that, if in no other respect, Celtic have them beat. The cloak of history won’t protect Celtic in Champions League Group B’s penultimate round of fixtures in the Parc des Princes tonight. When a Brazilian, a Uruguayan and a Frenchman are likely to weave mesmerising spells in and around their penalty area it won’t help that the travelling support can chant about an afternoon long ago in the heat of Lisbon, but it gave Brendan Rodgers unmistakable pride and satisfaction last night. In the bowels of PSG’s deeply impressive stadium he drew a distinction between the hosts and his own club. Celtic had history, tradition, stories, sagas and fans who had been with them through generations. He did not quite say PSG had none of that, only money, but he came close. When it was put to him that Celtic have something money cannot buy, history, his eyes lit up. “Yes, absolutely. You can’t buy that. And we have to do that in our world. We will never be able to do this here [alluding to PSG’s astronomical spending since being taken over by Qatar Sports Investments in 2011]. That is why people will think it is wrong in football. But Celtic have something a lot of clubs don’t have: a rich history, a support and a fanbase a lot of clubs don’t have. It is the big challenge we have but it is a challenge we are progressing on. “You can’t buy soul but speak about PSG in 20 years’ time. This is the formation now of a club that has investment and they clearly want to be winners. Can they then sustain that over time? If you are talking big, iconic clubs — and for me a big club has history, support, fanbase — Celtic, of course, has all that but we don’t have anywhere near the finances of Paris Saint-Germain.” PSG have spent an estimated £900 million on transfer fees alone under their phenomenally well-resourced and ambitious Qatari backers and in Neymar, Edinson Cavani and Kylian Mbappé they have assembled the most expensive forward line football has ever seen. None of this is news, of course, and especially not to the Celtic players who were shredded 5-0 in Glasgow on match day one. Since then Rodgers and his team have restored some credibility by beating Anderlecht, running Bayern Munich close and putting themselves on course to drop into the Europa League after Christmas. But PSG started at an exceptionally high level at Celtic Park and, with three subsequent wins, they now stand at maximum points, 17 goals scored and none conceded after four group games. “As a team we try to learn,” said Rodgers. “We have to take defeat and it can be hard at times but that one, on that first night, was a tough one for us. That was football at the very highest level. The number of people who have told me that was the best away performance they have seen at Celtic Park. Their defenders defend in a way I like. They hide the ball [ie keeping possession for long spells] and they do it as good as anyone.” Celtic have had so many of these David versus Goliath hurdles under Rodgers — Barcelona and Manchester City last season, PSG and Bayern this — and the narrative does not change. They must concentrate, minimise individual errors, make good decisions, work tirelessly, maintain their discipline and structure, take the ball under pressure, pass it effectively and hold it up well to give themselves precious breathers. Pull off all of that and they probably will still lose, if not by the 5-0 which led Rodgers to being untypically critical and saying Celtic played like under-12s in the first meeting. Last night Craig Gordon smiled when the French media asked if the Celtic goalkeeper had played in the Parc des Princes before. Well of course he had, when Scotland beat France in 2007. To him a Celtic triumph would be an even bigger achievement. Gordon has faced Cristiano Ronaldo, Karim Benzema, Lionel Messi, Luís Suárez and now PSG’s Neymar, Cavani and Mbappé. “This PSG team is better, so anything like that Scotland result would be sensational,” said Gordon. “It’s how they play together that makes the difference. Barcelona had that with the understanding between the three [forwards] and it looks like PSG do too. This team is very slick and you can see they’ve worked together throughout this season to produce some unbelievable performances. I’ve been lucky enough to face most of the best strikers in the world and this three are definitely right up there and will only get better. Can they surpasss the Neymar, Messi, Suárez trio at Barcelona? Who knows? As long as they get on with each other for long enough…” When it comes to history Celtic don’t want to suffer the Champions League’s heaviest defeat (that currently stands at 8-0). Realistically, being the first team to score a European goal against PSG this season is probably the extent of their ambition. |

I noticed that myself. What you were forgetting though is that the trophy subsequently was awarded to the Worlds Most Successful Football Club™ after they were cheated in the Mythical Semi Final that year. |

I've translated this from the French newspaper, Le parisien. " PSG – Celtic: Paris had its Celtic moment Thousands of Scottish fans, with or without tickets, wandered around the capital on Wednesday. Good humour and plenty of beer. Paris had not seen such an influx of foreign fans since Euro 2016. This time the green and white did not come from Ireland but from Scotland. About 5000 Celtic supporters wandered round the streets, most of them from Tuesday. Displaying their colours and drinking lots of beer. Wednesday in sunny Paris these fans nicknamed the “Celtic Boys” increased the temperature of an already unseasonable warm November. Spread over the main locations they were certainly noticed by both the casual Parisian onlookers and the “enemy”. “The PSG supports are cool “, said Fergus, met in the afternoon alongside 500 other Scots in Place de Clichy in the north of Paris. “We treat each other with respect. The atmosphere in the first leg was great despite the score. The only thing we don’t like is Neymar! He is always on the ground, he is edgy. He really is an annoying guy.” There you have it the Brazilian’s notoriety set out even though the former Barça player did not hesitate to give his answer on the park. Montmartre, between the Moulin Rouge and the Sacré-Coeur provides a picture postcard setting for the supporters often portrayed as the best in Europe. “We are the best in Europe, Yes!”, says Steven, a guy about 50. “Players like Clarence Seedorf or Andres Iniesta have said it. It's our culture, rooted in our hearts.“ Later in the day, after having drunk and left cans and bottles in their wake, 2,200 Scots assembled at the Parc des Princes where their allocated section was completely filled. For the remaining 3000 Bhoys without tickets the place to be was in various bars in the city. “But your bars are too small,” laughs Tixie, who had organized a rally in a venue in the south of Paris. Planned to accommodate 1,000 fans, it was a flop, with the Scots preferring to stay in the city centre or closer to the Parc des Princes. Once in the vicinity of the Porte d’Auteuil the Celtic Bhoys quickly became disillusioned but always good sports, literally talking against the incessant noise coming from the Auteuil stand which had prepared a nice Tifo to welcome its team. The assessment of this French trip is obvious: a bit of tourism and lots of alcohol (without incident it should be noted). When it comes to football they should be welcomed back.
