No link, but Stephen McGowan is reporting that Amazon, Facebook, Eleven Sports and Premier Sports are all looking at SPFL TV rights. Could be a trial balloon aimed at smoking out higher bids from Sky and BT?

How does the Eleven sports package work? Is it via TV or online?
Just thinking about this, I get why its probably the future, but my wee Granda doesn't have the net or any intention of ever getting it, so he would miss out on Scottish football if it were net viewing only.

McGowan clearly has a source within the SPFL as he always gets these "scoops" on the TV deal. Except it never amounts to much. Last year he was telling us BT had moved to the head of the queue. So I guess that must have been nonsense.
He's peddling what the SPFL want him to, which is extremely little but apparently helpful to them.
Facebook and Amazon have been shoehorned into the headline for impact but it's more likely to be Eleven Sports that offer a deal that will challenge Sky or BT.
They'll get the opportunity to see exactly how successful their launch of La Liga coverage in the UK is come August. The SPFL don't need to make this deal until late this year or early next so they'll get a good idea of the numbers Eleven Sports put together to see if they get anywhere close to what Sky pulled in for its La Liga coverage. They'll want to do their homework having been burned by leaving established broadcasters behind before.
The sad thing is I expect Premier Sports to be competitive as well. They've been hoovering up rights like the PRO14 recently. Premier is basically a rebadged Setanta with the same level of risk and the same lack of quality.
However if they are interested then you could have up to five interested parties which is healthy.

I heard that there is 3 interested parties in the SPFL rights. Sky and BT were the two front-runners and the other party wished their participation to be kept as a secret. It wouldn't make much sense for Eleven Sports to remain to anonymous and it certainly makes sense that Amazon would want their participation to be not widely known because if it were known they were interested in any sort of football rights the EPL would've gouged them for more money.
My guess the three interested parties in the SPFL are Sky, BT and Amazon.

My guess the three interested parties in the SPFL are Sky, BT and Amazon. Apparently MP & Silva sold SPFL rights in Portugal to Eleven Sports recently. A very minor deal in another market admittedly, but I'd be surprised if they did not at least want to have a discussion with the SPFL over rights. Their pockets were deep enough to pay the £20m+ per season for La Liga in the UK. They need to pad out their offer in the UK quite quickly, although the SPFL deal is still two years away from starting.
Premier Sports have basically all but confirmed they they would be interested as a minor partner too.
The North American rights are now in the hands of a streaming service too.
The beauty of it for the SPFL is that they'll get to see how it works for them with La Liga from August, with no decision needed on the SPFL deal needed until maybe next Feb or March.
Incidentally, that PRO14 deal is now worth up to £30m a year. That's more than double the previous deal, but it screens all 152 games. It's also a deal involving broadcasters from at least four countries including South Africa. But it should be encouraging that they have doubled their deal.
One of my biggest fears for the SPFL deal is what dinosaur SPFL chairmen will allow the league's executive to negotiate. They need to agree to up the total number of live games from 60 to ~80, up the cap on live home games per team from 4 per season to at least 5. This will guarantee a lot more of the better games can be screened live and make it more attractive to bidders.
They should also be looking to secure some live coverage of the second tier and get guarantees about the quality and availability of highlights packages. This affects what the BBC can and can't do more than people seem to realise.

According to the Motherwell fan at my work, who is well connected with the club’s board, Sky’s offer is the better of the two. I’m only surmising here, but if Amazon were one of the interested parties their interest was only at a preliminary stage. They have some Premier League football and I can imagine that they want to get a bit more football to entice people to their Prime video service. Eleven Sports haven’t ruled out selling the La Liga rights on to a 3rd party to distribute either. My personal thoughts that Amazon have probably sounded out the SPFL as a possible target to increase their live sports portfolio.

As far as I know, BT is behind Sky in terms of subscriptions in Scotland, compared to the situation in England which is far more favourable to BT. You'd think they would want to grab more of the SPFL away from Sky.
Considering how shampoo Sky are, you'd hope BT would want to do that at least.

Eleven Sports haven’t ruled out selling the La Liga rights on to a 3rd party to distribute either. My personal thoughts that Amazon have probably sounded out the SPFL as a possible target to increase their live sports portfolio. I don't think Sky are aiming for exclusivity in SPFL rights. They don't have the space in the schedule for it.
Anybody wanting the secondary SPFL package - roughly similar to what BT have now albeit with maybe 5-10 more live games - will probably need to offer somewhere between £12-15m per annum. That's not prohibitive for any of these companies.
The broadcaster who want the first pick package will hopefully need to pay more like £30m p.a. That's most likely to stay with Sky.
Eleven Sports are aiming for a carriage deal with Sky, but it will be to deliver a distinct Eleven Sports channel on the Sky platform that is available within the existing Sky Sports subscription. It won't necessarily be selling it on to Sky to screen La Liga in their own channels. Sky are all about shutting Virgin and BT out of having access to the content on their platforms, even when they don't have the rights to the stuff in the first place.
If that's what Eleven Sports are looking to do, they'll need more than just La Liga content eventually, no matter that there are 380 games to show live, re-runs, highlights etc.

Four game ban for celebrating a goal. A case of his past coming back to haunt him or an over reaction? I think a two game would suffice, the suspended two game ban he had hanging over him.
LENNY LOSS? Hibs boss Neil Lennon could face a FOUR game ban after ‘aeroplane’ celebration against Rangers The Hibees boss was cited by the SFA’s Compliance Officer after he ran onto the pitch to celebrate Jamie Maclaren’s late leveller against the Gers
Spoiler: click to toggle By Robert Martin NEIL LENNON will tomorrow discover if he is to punished for his ‘aeroplane’ celebration during his side’s 5-5 draw with Rangers on the final day of last season. The Hibs boss was cited by the SFA’s Compliance Officer after he ran onto the pitch to celebrate Jamie Maclaren’s late leveller. A two-game touchline ban would ordinarily be the punishment doled out by the governing body for such an offence. That means, should he be found guilty, Lennon could be banished from the dugout for an accumulative four fixtures. With Hibs not involved in the Betfred Cup group phase due to their Europa League participation, Lennon would be suspended for their Premiership outings against Motherwell, St Johnstone, Aberdeen and Livingston. Sky have plastered four Championship games and one League One game all over the Football League opening weekend, which begins the same weekend as the SPFL. Friday, Saturday, Sunday and Monday.
Just in case anyone was in any doubt where their priorities lie after the Premier League.

Four game ban for celebrating a goal. A case of his past coming back to haunt him or an over reaction? I think a two game would suffice, the suspended two game ban he had hanging over him. LENNY LOSS? Hibs boss Neil Lennon could face a FOUR game ban after ‘aeroplane’ celebration against RangersThe Hibees boss was cited by the SFA’s Compliance Officer after he ran onto the pitch to celebrate Jamie Maclaren’s late leveller against the Gers Spoiler: click to toggle By Robert Martin NEIL LENNON will tomorrow discover if he is to punished for his ‘aeroplane’ celebration during his side’s 5-5 draw with Rangers on the final day of last season. The Hibs boss was cited by the SFA’s Compliance Officer after he ran onto the pitch to celebrate Jamie Maclaren’s late leveller. A two-game touchline ban would ordinarily be the punishment doled out by the governing body for such an offence. However, the fiery Northern Irishman has a suspended ban of two games hanging over him following an angry rant at referee Kevin Clancy during Hibs’ 2-2 draw with Kilmarnock in February. Speaking after the breathless draw against Rangers, Lennon said: “It was worth it! Trust me. “They [Rangers supporters] make it personal don’t they? You all hear it. They are singing sectarian songs at me. “It’s just a little bit of ‘have some of that’. I should not get a ban for that. “I was nowhere near them. I was just letting them know how pleased I was to get the equaliser. “I think the sending off is enough and I don’t think I should get further punishment for that.” https://www.thescottishsun.co.uk/sport/football/2816276/hibs-neil-lennon-ban-rangers/ I think Lennon also has four games left of a five match European ban that he received after his first match managing Hibs, in Europe against Brondby.
Looks like he may need to get comfy in the stand for a bit.
