Quoting limited to 3 levels deep
There are loads of stories about the Peru game, from Videla (and Henry Kissinger!) visiting the Peru dressing room to "wish them luck", best players being substituted, sacks of grain being delivered to Peru, political prisoners being released etc. Also shenanigans in the final like the Dutch bus being forced to turn up late and one of the players having to remove a protective stookie from his broken arm. Also read that the Argentina players were doped on amphetamines for most of the games too, the whole tournament is mired in controversy
Aye but, it was one of the best tournaments ever for spectacle and not the bloated corporate scheidt it is now. So let's forget all of that , and the Argentinian Junta running the country at the time, or Scotland's abysmal showing, it was great as a 14 year old kid to stay up late and watch some of those amazing games. Fair enough, I was 1 so just know it from books and TV highlights.

There was a programme on the History Channel recently called Pele, Argentina and the Dictators, it was pretty good documentary and would be a good start if someone wanted to get information about what was going on in South & Central America during that period.
I was 13 at the time of the 78 World Cup but was aware of the Military Junta and some of what was happening there as family politics were and mine are very much to the left but had little knowledge until watching the programme of the Brazilian Military with their slogan of 'Brazil, Love It or Leave It' and their role in the management & squad selection, training and exploitation of Brazil's 1970 World Cup win.
The year before the 78 World Cup I remember the protests that took place as Scotland were going to play friendlies against Argentina and Chile, both countries had Military Dictatorships. Chile in particular as the National Stadium where the game was to be played had been used as a Concentration Camp to torture and murder those who's politics were on the left. Despite the protests the SFA pushed ahead with the match and is remembered as Scotland's Match of Shame.

GERS ODSONNE FOR THE TITLE
New Celt will inspire Ibrox men
By MARK HATELEY
News that Celtic were set to break their transfer record this week didn’t bother me in the slightest. Normally this kind of stuff would have your average Rangers fan shaking in his carefully polished brogues, but with new man Steven Gerrard playing the flute of integrity down Ibrox way these days its likely to have the OPPOSITE effect.
It is also guaranteed to work the other way too. Think about it. New signing in the poverty-stricken east end of Glasgow can only mean one thing. Celtic have signed a new player.
You can just imagine thd reaction at the new Humming Bird Training Centre. One of quiet acceptance and heads nodding sagely.
Last season with my old club in a mess Celtic splashing the green stuff would have had the Ibrox legions in a loyal panic. Now? It’s the gauntlet slapped on the table time with Gerrard ready to put his next to it and then some.
New signings have been scaling the marble staircase all week desperate to reach the pot of red white and blue at it’s summit of honesty. Believe me, when you walk it you are aware of legends of the past carefully escorting you on your travels. When you think of men like David Dodds and Gregory Stevens believe me you run up those spacers.
It may not be the all encompassing hands of Walter Smith these days awaiting, but I’m willing to bet Steven Gerrard will make his mark and create his own history next season.
In my day, Walter always had me well drilled.
He also made sure you knew your job and Gerrard will be the same. Celtic may have thought with Eduoard they have signed a young French striker but who is to say they have?
Media speculation in my view and food to Gerrard’s ears, especially ahead of the new season. It’s Ger-mongous from the ex- Liverpool ace and if he is looking for a striker coach who might be looking to prove himself after being a colossal failure at somewere like Hull City on the past then - well, who am I to tell him his job of dignity?
Lets just say it’s all Odds-Uard Gers will win the treble

I think ‘flute of integrity’ may be your best phrase yet. Aye, that tickled me as well.
EDIT Just to say I miss these ‘articles,’ particularly so the Leggat ones (though I appreciate they may have strayed somewhat towards libel/slander in their insinuations he drank Windolene and the likes...)

Brilliant ! the elephant man and that other ugly bazza Gregor Stevens ! The two of them would earn a fortune working on the ghost train at M&D’S . Got on the bus to Fundee last year.
Then Dave Bowman (ex-Dundee Utd) got on.
A few stops later, Davie Dodds got on.
Not even a flicker of recognition between them.
Edit: apologies to prestonpans1745 - i posted this elsewhere many moons ago.

Matt McGlone: Celtic superfan suing club for £50,000 after falling and hitting his head at game A CELTIC superfan is suing the club for a £50,000 payout after falling and hitting his head at a game. Matt McGlone - editor of Celtic magazine Alternative View - is taking the Parkhead team to court after claiming he suffered injuries in the fall. Mr McGlone wants compensation of £50,000 plus eight per cent each year since the accident - a total of £66,000 so far. But, in papers lodged at Glasgow Sherrif Court, Celtic’s lawyers say the accident was Mr McGlone’s own fault. The 63-year-old was at Parkhead on December 3, 2014, with his teenage son to see Celtic beat Partick Thistle 1-0. Around 9.40pm he was heading out of the Jock Stein stand when he slipped and hit his head on the metal part of a fold up seat. Mr McGlone, of Mosspark, suffered a deep cut over his forehead that “bled profusely” and was taken by ambulance to Glasgow Royal Infirmary. Court papers say that, as well as a scar over his eye, he was left with pain in his left knee, neck and back. Mr McGlone’s lawyers claim a drink was spilled on the ground at the stand, which was also wet due to fans bringing in rain water. The lawyers say the concrete floor, which is around 20 years old, was worn and slippy, causing the dad to fall. Their claim reads: “The flooring along the row does not meet the minimum slip resistance value considered by the UK Health and Safety Executive as necessary to provide a safe floor environment.” But in response, Celtic claims Mc McGlone, who worked for the club, was rushing to meet his 13-year-old son. The papers state: “It was [Mr McGlone’s] duty not to rush through rows of seating in the stadium. “It was his duty to watch where he was placing his feet. “In each and all of these duties, the pursuer failed and by his failure, caused or materially contributed to the accident.” Lawyers for the club say a steward inspected the ground and found it to be dry. Mr McGlone says he had to have physiotherapy at the National Stadium Sports Health & Injury Clinic and was unable to work for two weeks following the accident. His lawyer says the £50,000 bill is to cover the cost of having to employ a helper to assist with carrying out deliveries for four months after the accident, to pay for travel expenses and over the counter pain killers. Mr McGlone’s claim also states he had to move in with his partner and son for two weeks as he couldn’t look after himself on his own.
