Quoting limited to 3 levels deep
Peter Latchford
Alan Sneddon
Andy Lynch
Johannes Edvaldsson
Roddy MacDonald
Mike Conroy
George McCluskey
Ronnie Glavin
Joe Craig
Tom McAdam
Johnny Doyle
Roy Aitken
John Dowie
Tommy Burns

A selection of players from our team that year. Very much transitional. Huns did little after til Sourness.
Aitken and Burns were probably too young. Also have to remember Scottish players were mainstays in league and European Cup winning English teams at that time.

Thought it very stange not one of our guys was there but understand Liverpool, Nottingham Forest, Ipswich all had top teams back them whilst we finished lower down in our own league.

McGrain was seriously injured. If not, he would have been there.

The programme last night didn't show, that when Scotland went 1-0 up against Peru, they then missed a penalty, Don Mason, which would have made it 2-0.
No, Peru equalised near the end of the first half. Mason's penalty miss was at the beginning of the second half.
 Couldn't remember if it was 1-0 or 1-1.

I'm new. Be gentle.
Correct re Johnstone in 78 - even if we had beaten Holland by 3 goals we would have been out b cause we were deducted 2 points
Danny was a real miss.
Rod, in his otherwise forgettable ‘oh le oh la’ at least penned the line
‘Only wish we had Danny McGrain’

The last rights issue didnt increase on the one before that but then it wouldn't as that was hugely inflated.

First ever penalty miss by him I think.

Thought it was a great documentary. Brought back some memories of that time.

The Iran game was the first time I probably recognised genuine rubbish on a football pitch.

Can't remember if it touched on it last night, but there used to be talk back then about not picking the 'Anglo-Scots' for the team. Not just people like Bruce Rioch who was born in England (or the likes of Bob Wilson a few years earlier) but ones who played for English clubs. So, the idea being that Souness, Dalglish, Buchan, most of the team in fact, should be dropped as IIRC it was suggested that their heart wasn't in it as much as the home-based players, as they rarely performed as well for their country as they did for their club sides.

Felt a bit sorry for Ally McLeod at the time, going through turmoil on the bench. Could almost have felt sorry for Willie Johnston last night, but then I remember a player needing the kiss of life after tangling with him.

Never heard this before - have you got a source?

Even the FIFA website has Scotland on 3 points:

FIFA World Cup 1978

Edit: They also have us finishing 2nd in the group so maybe not that reliable! I can't find anything anywhere to suggest Scotland had points deducted, though.

Wikipedia has Scotland on 3 points. Reading Archie McPherson's book about Scotland's World Cup campaigns, and he doesn't mention points deducted.

There was no points deduction, if we had beaten Holland by 3 clear goals we were through. I think the press were the ones that said if we had done got the win by 3 goals we would have had points deducted but we had lost the Peru game and FIFA don't seem to do that to a team, all I know I was a tearful 13yr old at the time lol

Great interview* with Gordon Smith in today's Times

The man's a visionary**

*It's a strange puff piece, presumably because he is looking for a job

**He is an utter clown and the fact that he got the top job at the SFA in spite of meeting precisely none of the specified criteria is yet another travesty for that organisation

Danny McGrain was a huge loss to both Celtic and Scotland at that time. Scottish players were at the core of most of the English teams at that time, if you think that a player like John McGovern captained Nottingham Forest to 2 European Cup wins, a League Championship and a League Cup and was never capped by Scotland

Curiously no question of Smith's impartiality following last weekend's piece on Murdoch MacLennan :ponder:

Reading the interview, Smith single-handedly moulded the game as we know it today.

He wanted to leave earlier.

Needed to resolve the top 6 pay issue and the remaining two packages first though.

RS has done brilliantly, some job he’s had for 20 years! I think maybe now he’s seen as a safe pair of hands when the clubs might want someone more modern and forward thinking. But who knows!
