they've never beaten us - a win on penalties does not count as a win
Can people please please stop posting this utter pish....seriously... :nono:

Did we draw in the Cup final against Aberdeen when Anton missed..don’t recall us sharing the trophy that day
so when we progressed against Benfica in 1970 by the toss of a coin, after the 3 - 3 aggregate, did we beat Benfica or just progress?
We won the toss of the coin...a phrase used regularly ....test match cricket for example

Now would you like to answer my question ??

I’ll give you another example....Did we draw with Raith Rovers at Ibrox in 1994 ??

yes, we drew the game - raith rovers won the penalty shoot out to determine who got the cup.

we "progressed" (the phrase used I'm sure) against Benfica on the toss of a coin.

Can't recall what your question was, but hope I've answered it

It certainly felt like a defeat against R Rovers in 94 and the huns in 2016, devasted, dont recall taking any solace and thinking we drew those games. To say otherwise is mad.

a bookie would have paid out on the draw but thats it as far as calling it a draw imo, we lost those games

I was at both games and I was devastated as well, but as the bookies state, the games were drawn
Did we defeat Benfica, no we won on the toss of a coin - I'm pretty sure the Benfica supporters were devastated that night as well (I'm pretty sure the match report mentions this) - do you think we beat Benfica?

Bit different since it was the toss of a coin but as there were two possible outcomes and we proceeded then yes, we did beat them, we certainly didnt lose.

But the pens issue is more clear cut, our players missed penalties, theirs didnt so we lost

Its quite a binary decision in my mind, no grey area

This nonsense isn't up for debate. Penalties/ coin it determines who wins.Winners go through or ..,well...win.

Can't understand why people tie themselves in knots over this: new club won and progressed to the final. We lost cos we didn't get to the final.

It's been gone and dusted. If we had won we would have celebrated a win.

Rangers won the game on penalties. You can frame it in a different way. When did they last beat us over 90 minutes? A long time ago

A toss of a coin is pure luck. A penalty shootout is anything but. It involves skill, handling pressure, goalkeeping ability, decision making, managerial decisions (choosing who to take them, what order) etc, etc. They beat us on penalties. We’ve since beat them six times in open play so I think it’s fair to say we’ve had the last laugh.
the game ended in a draw - the penalties were to decide who won the cup - they didn't beat us, they drew with us.
the toss of the coin is just another way of deciding who should progress / win the trophy
If I remember correctly, it was the Benfica game that effectively started the process of finding a new way to determine the outcome of drawn ties, resulting in the penalty shoot out being introduced.

The wee man is hilarious. I was in his company at a function not long ago and he had us all in stiches. Still needle sharp at his age and does a lot behind the scenes at Celtic Park :worthy:
When he met Ronnie Osullivan recently I was in stitches...Ronnie was too - you can find it online!

I dont know Bertie only met him once or twice but street smart & wise probably does not begin to cover it from me watching from afar.

Swatted Der Hun media a dillion here.

Bertie :worthy: cracking the jokes with Ronnie, great stuff,The wee man is an absolute legend, must be a joy to be in his company

Citing bookies practices has more interpretation than in your example. In 1970 betting was limited to 90mins play and probably “to qualify.” There was no opportunity to bet on the outcome of extra time, or penalties as the case may be. You can do that now of course. In every case you either win or lose a bet.

Back to the match and one team is knocked out and that in any instance is a defeat.

Do the goals scored in a penalty shoot out count towards the players total goals for the season?

Not directed at you and a bit off topic but just reading this debate and it got me thinking about if the penalty shoot outs are counted officially or ignored by the players?

In terms of points it has. That's of our making though, but I don't think it's that unreasonable a comment from Wilson.

Wilson isn't that bad. Can't remember him saying anything about Celtic that was particularly shocking. He's no Provan or Walker.
