Correct decision by the club.

Bar a few zoomballs on here I haven't met anyone who had a problem with what the old fella did.
 Yep.
Given your unwavering support to Griffiths being a 'daft wee laddie' I'd like to think you of all people should show the youth a wee bit of sympathy.

Feel bad for the young guy who will have trouble getting a job for a bit of gross stupidity. Club were right to ban him though.

Quite a lot of people have fancied giving the guy who chucked a bottle at the rapid Vienna game a boot in the baws. Similarly with the two who attacked two rapid players. Their actions cost the club big time. Rapid got to a final that year.

Maybe the 61 year old remembered all that shampoo and hit the guy a slap. Regardless, he didn't beat him senseless. It might not be fair or just or anything like that but anyone running on the pitch and doing something that could have serious repercussions for the club really can't be amazed if some carrot bats him around the head.

He tried to boot a player on the pitch. Amazing anyone gives a eff about someone chinning him in the circumstances. I don't think he'd be that surprised himself.

the guy made a tit of himself in front of the whole of europe, got dragged away by the polis, smashed in the face by an old boy and has been banned from going to a football match anywhere. I hope he has learned his lesson but I also hope there's not more vigilante action, I reckon the wee dick has suffered plenty. At the end of the day he didn't harm anyone (I actually think he wasn't trying to and just wanted to look like a hard man), hope he learns from this and betters himself.

What a fandan though.

No sympathy for the eejit. Has big consequences for him, but running on to the pitch and trying to kick a player is serious shampoo. As for the guy that hit him, he shouldn't have done it given the boy had already been huckled but I have sympathy for him. As did the Sheriff when refusing to ban him from football. I don't think there is a big danger he is going to cause any problems in future. The young guy deserves a life ban though.

self policing is all well and good but when the guy is already under arrest with the state police then there's no need.

taking liberties as someone has already pointed out. hitting someone you know can't hit you back.

the act of a coward.

Don't remember anybody being taken to court for the bottle throwing incident v Rapid Vienna.
Vaguely remember a Scottish newspaper tried to pin it on one poor sod but it never came to anything.

I actually misquoted him. He actually said (and this is a direct quote):

"One of the effers should have got his gun out and shot him" after a diatribe before and after about increased terror threats and police presence.

What a dick. :ffs:
Surely not?

What an utter wink.

Wrong. He admitted and was found guilty of assault.

I'm not saying he should have done it. He was done for it in court. His victim apologised to him. He was fined for it. He's been dealt with. His actions won't bring sanctions on the club so it's not the biggest issue of the evening. I don't think he should be banned. Others might, that's their opinion.

It's an entirely different situation from running on a pitch and swinging the boot at a player. It's not even comparable. That guy deserves his ban. He'd most likely agree.

One thing is worse than the other. The guy attacking a footballer is worse than the guy slapping him. That's it.

Mr Lavelle is a 61 year old season ticket holder from St Albans, Hertfordshire. He takes his epilepsy sufferer nephew to matches.

The wee fud that ran on the park was gesturing to folk to come ahead as he was taken away. Indeed, as I described earlier in the thread, he was involved in an altercation with a few lads in the standing section. One guy was leaning over the wall trying to land a few on him. I'd say it was more than likely that the wee fud was still thinking he was a ticket. I watched the incident at the time and have since seen photos of it.

Mr Lavelle was in the tunnel part of the exit and obviously gave him a wee slap on the back of the head. It would have been hard to land a proper blow since the wee fud was surrounded by police. At the time I saw an officer later talking to Mr Lavelle - I hoped he was going to be let off.

Mr Lavelle is exactly the type of fan I want to see. Self-policing of the Celtic support to keep us free from vermin. It's a shame there aren't more cut from the same cloth as Mr Lavelle. I'll gladly stand the oldbhoy a few pints if I meet him in a boozer.
Hope his epileptic nephew was ok whilst he was in the jail.
You couldn't make it up.
The one guy in the whole stadium that should have kept the heed.
Why?? Does seeing your Uncle slap someone bring on an epileptic fit.

if you read back you'l see comments like 'he deserves eveything he gets' etc.

he admitted it because he was advised to, in order to get a quick bail and get home due
to a ridiculous interpretation of a ridiculous law that makes it possible to be convicted of
assaulting somebody when no contact was made.

i saw the video. i don't think he knew what he was intending to do. i also saw the manager
of my club being assaulted in the real sense of the word. with the cameras actually showing
it but it was an 'alleged' assault that was later deemed a breach of the peace in a court of law.

scottish law is a total ass and that's why he pleaded guilty to assault. the lawyers and
smart alecs amongst us can use it to condemm a young man who had a moment of
madness but forgive me if i stick to my own definitions of right and wrong and what
a real assault actually looks like.

He does deserve everything he gets. That is not wishing his life to be ruined. Compared to what the club might suffer his punishment will never compare. The most the club can do is ban him for life. Hardly ruining his life. The courts could jail him but I do not see the point in that and (depending on any previous) would not expect it. There will be some deterrent element, however, and I will leave the Sheriff to assess that. If he gets a sentence that ruins his life it's because there is something else there we do not know about. But as I say I doubt his punishment will be so severe.

You are probably right in that some may have wished him hung, drawn and quartered (particularly at the time) but many just agree he deserves what is coming to him. Yes he was stupid, yes he was drunk, yes the kick at Mbappe would have been comical if it was not so serious, but you can't have people running on to a sports field trying to assault people (regardless of your opinion on that law).

And if I remember correctly the guy who went for Lenny was not acquitted of assault, but of assault with a racist element. It was the last bit they could not prove. Regardless, that eejit got the sentence he would have got for the assault anyway. Sheriffs don't always get their sentencing right but he did then. They were also right in not banning the boy who skelped the laddie on Tuesday from all football.

Happy to let them pass sentence in the knowledge it will not, in itself, ruin the boys life. And as regards the boy pleading guilty, I expect the weight of evidence would have been rather persuasive rather than a need for bail. I don't think a remand was in the offing.
