Well I think your reverence to them is a bit daft, but there you go.
Fortunately Brendan doesn't
I'm quite surprised that Rodgers has an opinion on how much you care about Scott Brown's passing stats.

Wish my old man was still alive so I could ask him to prove Murdoch was a good player by producing some stats on his passing. Eff knows how he was judging him. ;)
If your old man was still alive he might have given you a more informed opinion on Brown too.

You from last summer

"I've never been a fan of Brown and don't mind admitting it. Brought up on McStay (bit spoiled probably, I know) I like a central midfielder who can control, pass, score, read the game better than Brown does. "

Now we've got stats supporting Brown as being an effective passer you're not interested.
Holy effin' Mother of god.

Are you suggesting your stats tell you Scott Brown was as good or better at passing the ball than Paul McStay? :ponder:
No I'm suggesting the stats indicate he's a competent passer of a ball. If I was to make a "Holy effin' Mother of god" statement I'd say something like

"I didn't say he was pish at everything but shooting, passing, control and tackling is a big list for a central midfielder to be lacking"

Quite happy to stand by my original statement - " I like a central midfielder who can control, pass, score, read the game better than Brown does"

You've seen a few play against us in the CL recently for Bayern and PSG. Maybe those clubs want Broony but can't afford him?

If competent is your goal, maybe that's where the disconnect is.

Who would be within our budget that can do all of those things better than Brown does? I don't mean literally name names, but aren't those types of players out of our reach unless we get them before they've fully developed into that player (as with Petrov) ?

Not many unfortunately. However, that doesn't make Broony a better passer of the ball than Paul McStay, no matter what stats you dredge up. He's about as good as we're going to get currently (overall package anyway). It would be good to get somebody beside him that can pass better (think Ntcham was intended to be that, jury still out). As someone pointed out, his passing stats last night were better than Bayern midfielders, they can be misleading.

I hate it when any poster replies with "so what you're trying to say is..." and then posts something that hasn't been said. But, I'm going to sound like that anyway

Am I right in thinking then that you've said that you want someone who can "control, pass, score, read the game better than Brown does", but you're also saying that we can't get such a player and Broony's "about as good as we're going to get currently" ?

That doesn't make a whole lot of sense to me.

True up to a point but only eventually was that the case.

He was posted missing in the early part of the game. He was by no means alone, but there was a brief return of the 'running through a swamp' phase that was all too familiar the season before last. I guess top class opposition and being out for a few weeks will do that to you, but he took a while to get near the speed of the game.

If he is going to hold the midfield, he becomes a signpost for the defensive positioning of our midfield. In the early part of the game, the sight of him running back towards his own goal invariably chasing behind the latest Bayern player to be bearing down on our 18 yard box, suggests something wrong.

He was better second half, but I would not go overboard.

Brown has those difficult to define qualities a la Aitken, inspirational and you miss him when he is not there.
Agree with Wigwam, not my idea of a great midfielder by any stretch, not comparable to McStay, although I have to say he has improved under Brendan.

Totally agree - It was Ntcham and more so Armstrong who let the game pass them by

As much as i like Ntcham there isnt much movement in him and is definitely suited more for the euro matches but Bayern are different class - Armstrong has always looked lost in europe

Brown is such an ever present in midfield that, when he occasionally misses a game we are presented with a midfield trio who haven't played as a unit very much, I think that has a big part to play in them being less effective. Its almost always written off as "we cannae live without Brown" though, it'd be interesting to see how say for example Ntcham, McGregor & Rogic/Amstrong looked after half a season playing together.

I wouldn't want to see that MF play together. It's not a matter of who Brown plays beside, it's what he brings to he team, not just as a player but as a leader. We're not the same team without him, the guys an inspiration to those around him.

I think the Brown Ntcham partnership could become very good over next year or so. Ntcham is still young but for me he has done enough to show he can progress.

Lost count of the amount of times I muttered to myself “well done Broony” watching that.

Excellent performance, we struggle massively without him.

Get McGinn in beside him next year to share the workload. That would make a powerful base and give our forwards the license to put teams to the sword.
