Was SB our captain under Strachan? Did he win any league titles as captain under WGS is what i'm asking..
Pretty sure it was Tony Mowbray that made him captain.
Indeed.

Made him captain once McManus went to 'Boro.
Robbie Keanes debut at Killie. Mowbray sent Brown on as a sub, he took the arm band off Loovens and played left back.

Roy Aitken a great player.

Hmmm.

Romance aside, it isn't even close. TB is the only player from those mentioned whose ability would be comparable to Scott Brown. I know it's subjective, but struggling to think what the criteria would be overall that doesn't have SB miles ahead.
You mentioned Aitken and ignored Grant and Boyd?... :twitch:
Nowt wrong with Tom Boyd

Gough has 10 league badges, 1 with United, I reckon he got 7 as captain, Broonie should have 7 as captain, 8 overall by the end of this season.
Hopefully he has another 3-4 seasons in him.
Brown has 7 overall, one under Strachan and then 6 as Captain.

I'd place him well above all the names listed in the original post.

As for Cesar- I doubt anyone will come close to giving us what that man gave us. :worthy:

Scott Brown is one of the great Celtic captains. In the 21st Century, it's almost inconceivable to think that a great player such as Broony would stay at Celtic for over 10 years, given the riches that would have been available to him elsewhere. It says a whole lot about Brown the man, as well as Brown the player.
He arrived amid some controversy over which side of Glasgow he'd end up on. Many thought Deidco got the better deal with Kevin Thomson, but Brown proved them all wrong. He has been a superb player for Celtic on the whole, with a couple of average season mainly due to chronic injury and poor management of his abilities. Every time he's been written off ( guilty :ph43r: ), he's come back better and stronger than ever. Brendan Rodgers took him to yet another level, and we can judge him now by how much we miss him when he isn't there.
I hope he retires from International football again, this time for good, to allow him to enjoy his twilight years with Celtic to the max. He can go for a few more yet, and enjoy the successes they will bring.
History will place him in context, but for now, I'd say McNeill>> Brown> Aitken in the pantheon of Great Celtic Captains in my life

A far far better player than I ever thought he would be. And everything you would want in a captain. Fir me it changed with the Diouf thing when he was slabbering about not knowing who he was. I’m the captain of Celtic. Never looked back.

And I thought we shoulda bought Kevin Thomson instead.....

I spent about ten minutes debating with myself whether Paul McStay was a great Captain or just a wonderful player. Forgot about Danny.

Aitken was only captain for a couple of seasons, but the Centenary year being one of them helps his cause. To be fair, he was definitely a tremendous leader on the pitch and it's easy to think he was captain for longer.

McStay was unlucky to be captain in a terrible time for the club. Lennon, Lambert and Boyd all good captains too.

My favourite Paul Lambert story involves Youngboab.

Youngboab was selected from the Huddle Club to be mascot at a Festive season game v Dunfermline at CP. Lambert had been out injured for the previous game v Hertz, and Larsson had taken the armband in his absence. Yougboab was ecstatic at the thought of meeting Henrik and getting his photo in the centre circle with him. Lambert recovered however and took his rightful place as Captain. Youngboab never forgave him.

The Festive season was unforgettable.

After the MON treble season, the Invincible season and the Centenary season, it's one of the best.

Wrong to compare Scott Brown with Billy as Billy is iconic.
We won't be seeing any statues of Scott on the Celtic way!!

Scott's a great player for Celtic and definitely ahead of Peter Grant.
What if we win the EL and he captains us?
Still not up there with Billy.

Hope you're right though  :potm:

didn't he play most of his career at the time when there were either no subs or just one sub?

McNeil holds many great records at Celtic, many that will never be challenged, but "never subbed" seems a rather ridiculous statistic to bring up.

a good player overall who has been a great servant to the club and we have had more than our worth out of the £4.5m. He wont be troubling any of our greatest 11 though.

Yep. One sub in those days and it was generally the goalkeeper.
