There was a point in the second half where McGeough turned him inside out twice in the space of 10 minutes and just after (or maybe before) McGinn broke clear of him and Brown got booked. His job as a CDM is to occupy the space that Whittaker drifted into a few times (one that led to the goal) as well. I'm not saying that they dominated Brown - because they didn't. It was probably 60/40 in our favour but Brown was never the best player on the park - thats just nonsense. As I said - Brown had an average game. He wasn't great but he wasn't bad. I put it down to him coming back from they injury and the weather. |

Love reading Mad Davie Provan. He's had some sort of grudge against Scott Brown for years. Any small chance and it's Scott Brown's fault. CRISTIAN GAMBOA did his team-mates a major favour in Munich. After Celtic froze in the Allianz arena, the Costa Rican took the rap for everyone On a night Gamboa was needlessly exposed to Bayern flying machine Kingsley Coman, the full-back was a convenient patsy. His performance was so poor, nobody was looking elsewhere for scapegoats. After a tie in which only Craig Gordon earned pass marks, Gamboa took one for his team-mates. Nobody more than Scott Brown. Media favourite Broony is the Hoops highest-paid player for a reason, he's supposed to influence big games. I can't remember the last time he held his own against quality opposition. In Munich he was chasing shadows. This year his three biggest tests have come against England in the World Cup, PSG and Bayern Munich in the Champions League. He was anonymous in all three. If Brendan Rodgers is in Glasgow for the long haul, he should be identifying Brown's replacement right now. The Hoops skipper never has and never will cut it at the top level. Provan says Brown failed to influence the game on Wednesday night Sure, he’ll look the part in the SPFL where teams sit off Celtic in their own half. That allows him time on the ball to turn and pick a pass without being pressured. Not in Munich, where his limitations were exposed. When Sebastian Rudy and Thiago pushed up on to him, he struggled badly. In the spurious land of statistics, Brown's numbers looked good. A completion rate of 56 of 57 passes looks in the Xavi, Sergio Busquets bracket. But it was fully 35 minutes before Brown made a meaningful pass, a diagonal switch that found Leigh Griffiths wide right. Everything else went sideways or backwards. Possession only has value when you’re sitting on a result. Celtic were two down at the time. Listen, that role isn't easy. Only the bravest players are prepared to take the ball deep in the pitch. But as well as a good touch, that position demands the ability to make a forward pass. In England, Fernandinho, Cesc Fabregas, Michael Carrick and Eric Dier are among the best. No surprise they’re all playing at top clubs. In a previous life Brendan had Steven Gerrard making those quarter-back passes for Liverpool. Unfortunately, Scott Brown has never been in that bracket. When Rodgers arrived at the club he was quick to get Brown onside. A dressing room that had put the tools away under Ronny Deila required a jump start. Brendan needed the captain to kick some ass. You can’t argue with the job Brown has done on that front. Nor can you dispute his own commitment. You don’t play more than 400 games for Celtic unless you have character. But somewhere along the line a myth has grown around Brown. Media pals even put Scotland's late charge at a World cup play-off place purely down to the Celtic skipper's return. I'd get the hype if Brown was dominant in Scotland against proper opposition. If he was bossing games against Arteta, van Bronckhorst and Co, you couldn't argue. Instead, he's lording it over the poorest domestic opposition in living memory. Celtic came under major criticism for their performance in Munich But if Brown was found wanting in Munich he wasn’t alone. Rodgers himself had a bad night. When Coman skinned Gamboa for the first time, a klaxon should have sounded in Brendan’s head. The mismatch in pace was frightening. Usually so pro-active on the touchline, Brendan allowed the torture of Gamboa to continue until Bayern had the game won. When Brendan could have put Kristoffer Ajer or Nir Bitton on at centre back, moving Mikael Lustig to right back, he didn’t trust either. And with Robert Lewandowski running off Lustig and Dedryk Boyata for fun, the summer failure to sign a quality centre-half had come back to bite the Celtic boss. Post-match Brendan said the result wouldn't change his philosophy on the game. There's much to admire in a conviction that took Liverpool to within a whisker of the EPL title. But there’s a thin line between conviction and stubbornness. Frankly, Celtic don't have the players to play Europe's elite at their own game. If Brendan's passing game works seamlessly in Scotland, there has to be a plan B when Celts are asked to step up in class. The idealist in Rodgers would resist the idea of parking the bus, but sexy football has less currency than results. Brendan's dear friend Tommy Burns would testify to that. |

Provan is a bitter, gone fishing , EPL loving bore. Let's ignore all the pros and ex pros who say Broony would skoosh it down South. Let's ignore , for example, his outstanding performance against Man City last season ( never heard you then Davie ) No, let's concentrate on why Broony was not pinging 50 yard passes about the place away from home against BM. Let's forget Broony was the only midfielder who held their own against BM. Talking baws comes very easily to Provan, as does cheap headlines. |

I'm always interested in what some people are doing during a football match. The amount of pish that gets sprayed around on here after a game like that where we're put under pressure at points is amazing. Brown owned Hampden again today and was a level above everyone else on that pitch. Stats will back this up, watching the game (and him in particular) will back this up and speaking to any of the players on that pitch would back it up. In hindsight it is a remarkable that we've had him for a decade. I hope he's captain for the 10. |

Ahhh and Oh dear. WITH his skinhead and Roy Keane stare Scott Brown looks a proper hardman for the television cameras in the tunnel pre-match. You can imagine kids running behind the sofa at the sight of the midfielder ready to rumble. Not the type you''d want to meet in a dark alley after closing time, that's for sure. What a disappointment then to discover Broony is really a sensitive wee soul. Brown needed a wheelbarrow for his bottom lip earlier this week when rounding on former Hoops striker Andy Walker. According to the midfielder, TV analyst Walker is "a poor man’s Gary Neville." I'll bet Andy hasn’t slept since! Seems Walker’s criticism of Celtic this season has struck a nerve with the club captain who believes the telly pundit should be doing more to "stick up for the club and manager a bit more". Maybe he wants Andy in a club blazer and cheerleader outfit when he's doing his stuff for Sky. I know Andy has an affection for the club but it's difficult to see how he could talk up this Celtic side without losing credibility. Either way, Brown and Co haven't done their talking where it counts — on the pitch. Scott has captained a side that lost to Malmo in the Champions League qualifiers, then finished bottom of their Europa League group without a win. Any prospect of a league and cup Double disappeared with defeats to Ross County and a second-tier Rangers. What does Brown expect? A ticker-tape parade down London Road? Walker isn't there to be a Hoops lickspittle, he's paid to call it down the middle. If that upsets Brown he's at the wrong club. At Celtic, stick goes with the territory if you're not performing and this Ronny Deila team has failed supporters miserably. Childishly, Brown added that Walker "didn’t win that much when he was here". He might be right, but Andy’s goals helped Celtic to an unforgettable Double at a time Rangers had the money to bury their rivals. That Billy McNeill’s Bhoys did it in the club's centenary year will see that 1988 vintage revered long after the current team is forgotten. As for demanding less criticism of Deila? If the midfielder had turned up for the Old Firm semi-final, Deila might not have had to resign. That was the final straw for supporters. A day when the manager needed his captain to justify his reputation. Before the game we had Broony giving Andy Halliday the Keano eyes in an attempt to intimidate the Gers man. Fine, but when the game started Brown was the one reported missing. That was no surprise to me. When was the last time Broony turned in a big occasion performance for Celtic or Scotland? Yeah, Gordon Strachan is a big fan, but where was Scott when the crunch Euro ties had to be won? When did he last influence a Champions League game for Celtic? He's better known on the continent for that stupid red card swipe at Neymar that cost Celts any chance of beating Barcelona three years ago. You'll have gathered I've never bought into the Brown hype. As a kid at Hibs he looked a good prospect. He got about the pitch well, liked a tackle and hated losing. His distribution wasn't great but time was on his side. Nearly a decade on that potential remains unfulfilled. Put it this way, I would have had ructions with him if he'd been in our midfield. He runs with the ball when he should be popping it off early. You'll rarely see him find a forward pass that hurts the opposition and he's never been a regular scorer even when playing further forward. Even at 30, you'd never bet against him picking up a needless red card. With persistent injuries kicking in I'd be surprised if the club captain has a significant contribution to make for Deila's successor. Whoever comes in should be looking for a new dressing room leader with Brown's best years now behind him. When it comes time for Broony to pack in, he'll have done well for himself. He reached 50 caps for Scotland, was Player of the Year and hoovered up domestic silverware. His admirers will regard him as a good Celtic servant. Me? I'll remember him as a poor man's Murdo MacLeod. |

Provan's right in saying that the 1988 season will be rightly remembered. We also suffered the traditional early European exit which meant we could concentrate on the league (we also got knocked out the Skol Cup, but as the song says, by the end of the season we didn't give a eff). To put it in context, Celtic teams of today in order to qualify have to beat teams that would have seen us get to quarter finals or semi-finals in the 1980s. The only time we got to the quarter final, in 1980 against Real Madrid, we had to beat the mighty Partizani Tirana and Dundalk (who we nearly blew it against). We lost a 2-0 first leg lead - and Davie Provan was in that team and other teams of the late 70s to mid-80s. It was also our first quarter final in the EC since 1974. This season we had to beat Linfield, Astana and Rosenborg just to get a chance to play in the competition proper. And when we do, we are up against teams on a whole different playing field when it comes to finance. Much as I loved the side from the 80s, we never faced anyone the likes of PSG in those days. The Real Madrid side had great players but were a shadow of the club they had earlier been. Would Davie have been so brave on the ball? He played in league sides that capitulated and surrendered titles to Aberdeen (once blowing a 7 point lead in April when it was 2 points for a win). And to add a bit more context, the Rangers side of 1988 could not 'financially kill Celtic' at that point. They had spent big on a number of England internationals (England weren't all that good right enough, same as ever) but they had needed to basically start from scratch having won only League Cups for the best part of a decade. Their biggest spending didn't come until a few years later. They bought Terry Butcher for £725k, but we bought Frank McAvennie for £1.25million. Maybe Walker and Provan should be more concerned with the 88-89 season and thereafter, where IMO the players believed the hun hype about cash and their bottle crashed. Maybe some of these players should look in the mirror just as harshly as they judge our current team - against clubs that genuinely can kill you with money. For all that, I don't think either of them are huns. Provan's comments might be said to reflect some of our current posters on here regarding Brown and Andy Walker just seems a half-hearted shock jock, someone who's so jaded with the game he can't even generate the enthusiasm to hate it properly. |
