Given our track record signing strikers over the past decade have been more hit than miss

Have they? :suspect:
Success - Hooper, Stokes, Griffiths, Dembele, Samaras, Keane, McDonald.

Duds - Brozek, Pukki, Balde, Murphy, Fortune, Rasmussen, Bangura, Berget, Cole, Ciftci, Lassad, Atajic, Miku, Scepovic, Killen, Kazim-Richards :ffs:

Would put Edouard, Guidetti & Maloney (2nd spell) somewhere inbetween
Fortune was sold to balance books when we went out of Europe. I thought he showed promise.

It is way too soon to judge Edouard. He has played equivalent of 10 games. His goal ratio is pretty decent.

Agree with most of this but Atajic was signed as a 19 year old for the under 21s, shouldn't be classed as a first team signing - I'd also argue that Fortune was in the middling area as well, and Berget wasn't a striker.

Success - Hooper, Stokes, Griffiths, Dembele, Samaras, Keane, McDonald. (7)

Decent - Edouard, Guidetti, Maloney, Fortune (4)

Duds - Brozek, Pukki, Balde, Murphy, Rasmussen, Bangura, Cole, Ciftci, Lassad, Miku, Scepovic, Killen, Kazim-Richards (13)

Still leaves us with vastly more duds than successes however.

We have wasted a fortune on hopeless strikers in the past 10 years. Odsonne is far from the complete player but has all the attributes to become a top class striker. Great attitude, ability, pace and strength.

Dembele will be prolific in the run in and he will leave in the Summer for a big fee and we will sign Odsonne.
Think we would only consider signing Odsonne after Dembele is sold (if he is) and it will then depend on the timing of it.

I assume that Odsonne will go back to PSG come June and with most of the transfers not done till later in the summer it would depend on when the option is valid to.

With each game he plays I am getting a stronger feeling that he is worth the reported gamble especially the way football is going and the fact he will have a year under his belt.

Has he ever played up top with Griffiths?
Away at Patrick Thistle in the second half.
It worked ok then iirc

Struggled badly on his own first half

We were needing a penalty box striker and he wasn't it. Played most of his football in the 3 behind the striker after he left. Had a decent spell alongside Keane when he was being used properly, like plenty of other strikers he wasn't the right signing or wasn't used the right way. To keep it on topic Edouard wold be the same, he's not going to play the lone striker role, he'll need to be part of a front 2 or we won't see him anywhere near his best.

He could have maybe have made himself useful as a horses for courses type squad player, but not for the money and wages involved. Huge waste.

Didn't we punt him just as he'd come onto a game with a few scorchers?

Personally I think we have to accept that between 7 and 9 million euros doesn't even represent the going rate for a striker these days.

Of course we occasionally get a gem and pay peanuts for quality, but that has happened precisely twice in over 20 years - Larsson and Dembele.

More often we've been required to pay well over that for the likes of Harrison, Sutton, Viduka etc, and when we've tried to hit middle ground, we have usually fallen badly and disappointingly short with Puuki, Baldé, Bangura etc.

The idea that there are gems of strikers hidden around the continent for £500-£600k is mostly a very rare exception rather than the rule. I think if we want quality up front, £7-£9m is about the price we're going to have to pay, and it is reliant on us moving them on for double that in 3 years.

On that basis, I'd Take Edouard for £7m or whatever it is. I think he's a good player who will get better and worth the money by today's standards.

Bangura deserves a section below duds all to himself.
 Ah, The Banger. I remember him getting pelters after a few subs appearances. I thought to myself "he just needs a start and time to come onto a game". Then he had a start. "Nup, they're right, he's pish!"

What you're saying is correct, but the problem is likely to be what wages will he be expecting.
