Scot Gemmill looked on in awe as French striker Odsonne Edouard terrorised Scotland at the Under-17 Euro finals back in 2015.

The Celtic target scored an audacious backheeler as the Les Bleus whipped Gemmill’s team 5-0 in the group opener.

Now the teenager could be unleashed on Premiership defenders as the Parkhead club try to seal a season-long loan for the Paris Saint-Germain kid.

Gemmill admits it would represent a fantastic piece of business for the Hoops and boss Brendan Rodgers if they can get the deal over the line.

Edouard was the undoubted star of the French side who went on to clinch the Euro crown and he made history when he became the first to player to bag a hat-trick in the U-17 Euro final as Les Bleus hammered Germany 4-1.

And the kid also set a new record with the eight goals that landed him the Golden Boot, eclipsing the seven netted by Jonathan Soriano of Spain 13 years ago.

Now Gemmill is convinced Edouard will light up the Scottish game. He said: “I remember Osdonne very well. He was the star of that French team and stole the show at those finals.

“Scotland played France in the opening group game and we were thrashed 5-0. You could tell even then that France were going to be serious contenders to win the competition.

“Edouard was a top player and even scored a hat-trick in the Final against Germany when they destroyed them 4-1.

“I took some comfort from that and I remember being relieved they did the same thing to other opponents as it helps in terms of coping with the nature of the loss we suffered.

“Edouard was definitely the real deal in terms of talent and goalscoring ability. He seemed to possess everything as a forward.

“He had the speed, size and power and I was greatly impressed by him. He scored a fantastic backheeled goal in our game and his technique was superb.

The 19-year-old spent last season on loan with Toulouse in Ligue 1, scoring just one goal in 17 appearances.

His alleged involvement in an air gun incident back in February led to the loan being cancelled, with Edouard handed a four-month suspended prison sentence and a fine. He has yet to make a first-team appearance for PSG and with the signing of Neymar and imminent arrival of Kylian Mbappe from Monaco it looks as though he has fallen further down the pecking order.

However, Gemmill believes that will just make him even more hungry for success.

The Scotland Under-21 boss said: “I know Edouard hasn’t made too much of an impression with PSG.

“I don’t know too much about his off-the-field problems but if Celtic do clinch a deal for him then it sounds as though they will he be getting a really hungry player who will be very keen to make a big impression in the Scottish Premiership.

“I’m delightfully surprised to see Edouard being linked with a move to Celtic as I didn’t expect to see him come to Scotland.

“However, this is a move that at this juncture could suit the club and the player. It strikes me as win-win situation for both parties.”

Gemmill believes Brendan Rodgers and Edouard could turn out be a match made in heaven.

He reckons the teenager fits the Rodgers prototype – young and ambitious but with room for improvement.

And the lure of Champions League football – where Celts will face PSG, Bayern and Anderlecht – can also help Celtic in the sales pitch.

Gemmill said: “That is a big reason why PSG are close to agreeing a deal with Celtic.

“The French club will know their player is going to be playing under a manager in Rodgers who has a proven track record of nurturing young talent and making them better. The Celtic gaffer’s pedigree on that front is already there to be seen.

“Celtic will be getting a top, young European player who will have a hunger and desire to do well.

“Edouard in turn will get the chance to play for a team that is in unbelievable form and is also playing and competing at the top level of European football in the Champions League.

“That is a quite unbelievable opportunity for the boy, to be able to sign for a club like Celtic who can offer Champions League football right away.

“I have to say it looks like a good fit for both the player and club.

“A lot of people will be seeing Edouard for the first time if he chooses to signs for Celtic.

“But it will be great for people like me to see how he has developed and progressed from a very early age as I can then compare him to the player I witnessed in Bulgaria with France during those Euro finals.

“I will be very interested to see how much he has pushed on in his career in the last two years.

“I am just excited at the thought such a top talent as Edouard could be coming to Scotland to play in our domestic league.”

But Gemmill admits the Parkhead club’s move for the French wonderkid underlines once again just how difficult it is for the players in his U-21s squad to reach the top.

He said: “That is a sign of football today. It just goes to show how hard it is for our own young Scottish guys to make the grade and break through at clubs like Celtic when they can go out and bring in someone like Edouard.”

When was the last time Celtic had a striker in the Scottish U21 team - Tony Watt?

Aitchison's only just been called up to the U19s for the first time; if Edouard's ahead of him for Celtic it's because he's a couple of years older with a fair bit more experience - not to mention he's quite possibly a better player.

He's right though. We don't have any young Scottish guys in our squad...

So, let me get this straight....we're looking at a loan deal for a player from one of our CL rivals? :ponder:

Anyone else thinking spy in the camp? :suspect:

I hope we're keeping him locked up in isolation for the week before the games against PSG so he doesn't leak details of our preparations like the special dietary supplement Griffiths is on (that's Tunnocks Tea Cakes to you or me!)

Don't worry. QSG are convinced they already won 6 points against Celtic (and another 6 against Anderlecht). Only their games against Bayern matter. On a fans forum I sometimes read, they only mentioned us the day of the draw, and no-one cares about loaning a reserves player to Celtic.

If he looks in anyway decent if the first couple of weeks we should buy him outright asap, before he starts smashing them in and every carrot in the EPL wants him...

I wonder if our deal stipulates first option. That would be ideal

If FM is anything to go by, and to be fair it's usually right with bits and bobs like this, the general loan to buy would be that the loaning club can purchase the player at any point in the loan for a stipulated amount. I know that's not a given, but ye'd think we would be doing deals that suit us a bit as well.

Yeah but first option would only apply to a deal between us and PSG. It wouldn't commit the player to anything. If he starts banging in the goals and his agent tells him he can treble his money by moving to England, there wouldn't be much we could do. I like the sound of that loan deal that's been discussed with Mustafi from Arsenal to Inter whereby if he plays in 50% of their matches this season, it triggers an automatic mandatory purchase clause.
