My brothers first reaction to the signing was to suggest we drive through to Celtic Park to wait in the car park. Hopefully with better success than 13 years ago.

CELTIC have signed one of the most naturally-gifted defensive prospects for years, according to a South African legend.

The Hoops have snapped up Ajax Cape Town defender Rivaldo Coetzee on an £800,000 deal and he’s set to arrive in Glasgow later this week.

And former Bafana Bafana star and now TV pundit Peter Matshampoose reckons the Scottish champions have secured a star in the making.

He said: “Rivaldo is the type of player everyone wants in their team.

“He has everything needed to succeed in the game.

“He is calm, comfortable on the ball and reads the game very well. He is also a brave defender.

“It might him a little time to settle abroad, but once he does he will fit in like a glove.

“I believe Rivaldo is a top quality player – he’s the best defender to come through South Africa for a long, long time.

“He has all the attributes required to go a long way.”

And Coetzee, who was the youngest player ever to be capped by South Africa when he made his international debut three years ago as a 17-year-old, previously revealed the origins for his unusual name.

He explained: “My father is a huge fan of Brazilian football and Rivaldo was his favourite player, which is why he named me after him.

“I’ve had a ball with me ever since I was a little boy. My father played in goal for an amateur side. When he was out on pitch, I was behind his goal with my friends, kicking my ball around.

“I grew up in a small place, and everybody knew how much I loved football. Maybe they thought it was just the right name for him to give his son, because football was his life.”

Coetzee’s arrival in Glasgow is likely to be for a limited time only – the 20-year-old was named by Scottish manager Stuart Baxter in his South Africa squad for the World Cup double-header qualifiers against Cape Verde.

Never heard of the guy, but trust Rodgers to get people to fit the system and quality levels he has attained with the squad already.

From the video's I've seen of him he appears to play mostly on the left side of the back two. I wonder if BR sees him more as coverage for KT once everyone is fully fit. At 5'10 he's pretty small for a center half.

Hugh Keevans and co on Radio Synde claimed he's injured and now it's not happening. Any truth to this or they just being wide?

I'm all for believing SNYDE has made an arse out of this, but I can't see any Celtic confirmation.
I see Ajax CT confirming the transfer. Maybe they want to announce it and push it through as they boy is crocked?

Queue the usual "if i don't see him with Paul the Tim" quotes!

Anyway, just can't see anywhere where Celtic have confirmed this. Not sure I trust the Ajax Ct twitter account.

If it's not confirmed and Ajax CT have jumped the gun then someone will be getting their baws toed

I assumed Celtic had reciprocated with confirmation but no, apparently not.

It's usually our policy to announce after a medical. I think?

Celtic new boy Rivaldo Coetzee insists it's a dream to join the Parkhead side and he can't wait to make his Champions League bow.

The Hoops made an £800,000 swoop to land the Ajax Cape Town ace this week and the 20-year-old admits he's hugely flattered to join Brendan Rodgers' all-conquering side.

And he's determined to make a big impact in the Group Stages of Europe's premier stage.

He said: 'I'm over the moon. It's something that I've always worked towards since I joined Ajax and now it's happened. I think that it's the right time and the right club.

'I met with the Celtic scout, and he showed me some videos about the club, supporters and facilities. I think it's the best option because the coach believes in youngsters and the type of football they play, coming out of the back, suits me nicely.

'For me to come from where I come from and have the chance on that stage...it's amazing. I don't think that I need to work on anything physically, I think my body is right the way it is. It's not about being physical, sometimes you need to be a bit more aggressive but I'm not really that kind of player.

'I'm just going to go there and play my football, that's why they've signed me. The manager will advise me on what I need to work on.

'When my agent, Michael Makaab told me that Celtic was interested and I knew that Brendan Rodgers was the manager, I couldn't believe it.

'It's every footballer's dream to play in the Champions League, and I have the opportunity to do that now. It's up to me to make full use of it.' And even the Scottish weather won't put him off.

He added: 'Obviously, I knew that the day will come when I would need to leave my comfort zone.

'With the weather and the way they live in Scotland, I just need to adapt to that and remember why I'm doing it. I'm doing this for my family, so the weather won't affect me, even if there's just two sunny days a year! I want to adapt quickly and try and get in the team quickly.

'Hopefully, the move is good for me and for the national team if I keep getting future call-ups. It's for all those that believed in me. It's my time to pay them back now, and show that they didn't make a mistake in helping me get this far.'
