No, but when you're the most talented player in the team as Nakamura was and you continually disappoint at Ibrox, it raises major questions. I never felt confident playing them away from home with him in the team.

Quoting limited to 3 levels deep
No one is suggesting performances at Ibrox is the only barometer of being a great player. But given the two-horse nature of Scottish football down the years, having players who can't handle facing them away from home is a major disadvantage. The likes of Larsson and Moravcik excelled at Ibrox and seemed to grow in stature when faced with the pressure of playing there. Nakamura wilted and often found himself subbed after contributing nothing. They weren't even a good side at the time.
Performing at Ibrox isn't the barometer for what makes a Celtic great. However, I'd be hard-pushed to name a Celtic great who hasn't performed at Ibrox.

Putting them to the sword in their own midden doesn't make you a great, but failing to do so would prevent you from being one.
Obviously I'm a bit biased on the matter, but I think his 'failure' to perform at ibrox is more a sign of the team. Nakamura was consigned to the wings, they need service, and runners off them to give them space. That Strachan side was often cumbersome. We had nobody in our midfield who had the presence to take a game by the scruff of the neck. I'd say his best overall performance was when Celtic beat Rangers 2-1 at Celtic Park to wrestle that season back. That game started by one of our central midfielders laying down a marker in the first minute when Robson hit Dailly(I think). Probably lucky not to be sent off but it showed for the first time in a long time that we won't be bullied. We allowed people to boot the likes of McGeady and Maloney as well as Nakamura for a good time. After that he went on to score his wonder goal and his piece of brilliance later in the game helped see Cuellar sent off, otherwise he'd have had two for the day. He also had a game at Ibrox where he wasn't playing well, and hadn't got the ball off his team mates. Strachan was going to sub him and he provided a brilliant assist, stayed on and set up another. I think he was a Celtic great of recent times. Nowhere near the lions or Larsson or Lubo, but since them, only Brown has made as much of an impact in my opinion.

Nakamura was a good Celtic player but for impact & influence on the team in big games he came nowhere near Alan Thompson let alone a Larsson or Lubo.

Thommo was always good for a goal or a sending off at Ibrox.

Oh I got Ibrox wrong, wasn't sure as it was a dead rubber goal.
And for Bobby define 'great' ;)
Btw I've never defined Naka as a Celtic 'great'.
A fantastic player, who would have excelled in a team that wasn't so utterly mediocre but not quite a great.

ps. Samaras and Graveson were excellent at Ibrox. The measure of any player is NOT how they performed at Ibrox.
Hi Donald,

Notwithstanding that you put a word in all capital letters, meaning that the point you're making absolutely must be true, do you not think that performance in games against the huns - and therefore games at Ibrox - is one measure to use to decide whether a player is Celtic great or not?
No, goals scored at Ibrox are NOT (I've done it again) :( the yardstick to measure a player.

You do realise that since 1990 (outwith a few under O'Neil and last season with Brendan) we've had I think about 5 wins at that hole.
In that time some very good players have faced them and we've failed to get a victory.

So somehow attributing the teams failures to one man and on the flipside believing a good performance at Ibrox maketh the man is bizarre.

Besides, I'd say two world class goals against one of Europe's finest is a better barometer than a couple against those tramps.
Had anyone claimed any of these things:

Good performances at Ibrox are the only barometer of a being a Celtic great?

Our failures at Ibrox under Strachan were all down to Nakamura?

A great performance at Ibrox makes you a Celtic great?

You're arguing against things that no one has actually said.

No, but failing to do anything at Ibrox while at Celtic for 3-4 years probably makes it tough to argue a case for "greatness".

The free kick at home to Man United then Boruc save Saha penalty. What a effing night. Parkhead was rocking
Most exciting 10 minutes I've ever seen in a soccer match.

Shunsuke Nakamura just turned 40 this week

But not only that, he's still playing in Japan's top Division, the J1-League

I think Gary Stevens tried to pass it back to the keeper and didnt see Cascarino who slotted it into the net

Belated happy birthday Nakamura-San :worthy:

I was incognito in the Aberdeen end 2007 not long after moving to Aberdeen when he scored a superb free kick. Most of the Aberdeen fans around me were appreciative of his dead ball skill.

The other lasting memory of the game is some cretin next to me shouting let that chinese carrot take our free kicks as well because we are effing hopeless at them :ffs:  in equal measure

All Shunsuke's goals

Edit: Belated!

Everybody in the Jock Stein knew where he was going to put that free kick.... The anticipation was delicious! Telling 4 Mancs after the game that we had qualified due to our head - to-head record but they had to win in the last game was tasty too! :rocker:

Sure was. I went to a party after the game, which culminated in a guy burning some artwork in his garden. Treasured memories.

Would love to see him in action in Rodgers' team - have a feeling that he would have been even better than he was with GS (and sorted out our atrocious set pieces too).

There were times he went missing, but in hindsight the way that we set up under GS was pretty reductive.
