FULHAM coach and former Celtic idol Peter Grant believes striker Moussa Dembele will have to improve his finishing if he wants to establish himself as a Parkhead star.

But Grant - 365 games for his childhood heroes between 1982-97 - is convinced Brendan Rodgers can turn the highly rated 19-year-old into a feared hitman.

France under-20 starlet Dembele hit 17 goals for Fulham in the Championship last season and has become Rodgers' first signing after deciding to quit Craven Cottage with his contract expiring today.

Celtic are paying just a £500,000 compensation fee for a talent of big potential who was also courted by the likes of first club Paris Saint Germain, Bayern Munich, Juventus and Spurs.

And Grant - who worked with the youngster over the last two years - told SunSport Online: "Moussa's a great boy and I'm delighted for him to get the chance to sign for a club like Celtic.

"Everyone knows what Celtic means to me - and I'd love to see Moussa be a massive success.

"He did well for us in the Championship last season, scoring 17 goals in total, and that underlined his potential.

"Moussa's got pace and power. But he's still raw and he has to work on being consistent with his finishing.

"I'm not being negative about Moussa, it's just a fact. But he's only 19 and I'm certain he'll continue to improve under the coaching of Brendan Rodgers and his backroom staff.

"They will also develop his game intelligence.

"Moussa at the moment is probably averaging a goal with every six chances and I told him often enough he has to work on improving that ratio.

"He's definitely got it in him to do so.

"Moussa's got a great attitude. He works hard and is eager to learn and a manager of the calibre of Brendan will, I'm sure, bring the best out of him.

"It's a fantastic opportunity for the boy.

"Celtic have a history of brilliant strikers, guys who were prolific - in my time alone there were the likes of Frank McAvennie, Andy Walker, Charlie Nicholas, Mo Johnston, Brian McClair.

"Now they've got Leigh Griffiths and his 40-goal return last season was phenomenal.

"That's the standard Moussa's got to aim for.

"He's a very ambitious lad - and he should take great confidence from the fact that Brendan Rodgers has made him his first signing as Celtic manager.

"That's a huge show of faith in Moussa."

Grant feels another factor that can make Dembele a Hoops success is the presence in the Celtic squad of ex-Fulham team-mate Patrick Roberts.

He added: "Patrick and Moussa were dynamite together with the youths here. They absolutely ripped it up, forming a brilliant understanding, scoring goals and teeing each other up.

"They were also good pals.

"Patrick will help Moussa settle into Glasgow - and I'd be thrilled if they were to deliver for Celtic on the park."

Peter not pointing out anything too surprising, a wee note of caution to give him time being so young which is sensible. Fairly confident Brendan will be bringing in another, experienced Forward. Someone that will help both Griffelow and Moose develop.

I don't think I'd describe Andy walker as a brilliant striker.

I'd lean towards a decent striker at best. Top tier of Scottish football was his level.

Those other strikers were all excellent and deco a cut above walker

MOUSSA DEMBELE claims he can become the best striker in the world.

The Celtic signing has joined his new team-mates at their Slovenia training camp and could feature tomorrow night in Brendan Rodgers’ first game against Celje after sealing his move from Fulham.

Dembele, who was close to clinching a deal with Tottenham in January, knocked back offers from PSG, Monaco, Stuttgart and Galatasaray to sign a four-year deal at Parkhead.

Now the 19-year-old who grew up idolising Brazilian superstar Ronaldo has set his sights on becoming the hottest hitman on the planet.

Dembele said: “I want to become one of the best strikers, or the best striker, in the world.

“That is possible and working with someone like Brendan Rodgers will help me a lot. The key is to work hard.

“I model myself on Ronaldo, the Brazilian one. As a striker he had everything. He could score goals, he could dribble, he could pass.

“Celtic is a massive club and I see my future here. Hopefully I can score as many goals as I can for the club, and become like Henrik Larsson.”

Dembele could have lined his pockets by joining a wealthier European club, but he is more motivated by winning trophies.

The France Under-20 cap said: “I had contact with PSG. There were many clubs in Europe, but Celtic was the first option.

“In January, it was between Fulham and Tottenham to get an agreement and they didn’t.

“Thankfully for me that worked out well as I’m now a Celtic player.

“At the time it was disappointing because you don’t know what is going to happen in the future.

“Now, though, I have to be grateful because this is a better opportunity for me.

“Celtic is a bigger club in Europe than Tottenham, and I will get my chance to play.

“I know I could earn more elsewhere, but I would haven’t the opportunity to play and a club like Celtic does not come along often in your life, so when that chance came, I said ‘yes’.

“I chase trophies. I’m 100 per cent focused on Celtic.”

Dembele has moved under freedom of contract and will cost Celtic around £500,000, with the development fee being split between Fulham and PSG, whom he left as a 16-year-old after eight years in their academy.

It’s quite a coup for Celtic to land the teenager, who banged in 17 goals in 46 games last season.

Dembele said: “I chose Glasgow because it is a city of football. As a young guy I want competition and it’s good for me to come to an environment where I’ll improve.

“The fans, the stadium, the club, Brendan Rodgers – put them together and I will become a better player here in Glasgow than other cities.

“Brendan did really well with players like Raheem Sterling and Daniel Sturridge and hopefully we can work together so that he can do the same with me.”

Dembele has already shown he is not afraid of a challenge in life. He quit PSG at 16 because he could see his route to the first team was blocked by a policy of signing expensive foreign players.

The Frenchman said: “I left because I felt that I wouldn’t get a chance when I was young.”

Leigh Griffiths, who bagged 40 goals for the Hoops last season, has vowed to see off any rivals for a starting slot. But Dembele insists he’s here to complement the Scot, not nick his place.

He added: “Leigh and I can have a good partnership.

“We’ll have to get to know one another, and by the time we get back from Slovenia hopefully we will know a lot more about each other.”

Terrific signing but still think we need another striker, an older fella preferably. At 19 I think he's a bit young to be expected to play every week and not experience that dip in form young players always have. Depending on how things are going at the time that can be a hard thing to get through for any player.

PS

When I say older I mean mid-20's. Not Sevco 'I remember Nam' older.
Wouldnt be a bad shout. BR did something similar at liverpool when he signed Ricky Lambert. Older head to come in and mix it up a little. We will play close to 60 games so we will definately need more than griffiths and dembele, especially if we have 6 UCL group games too.
He replaced Suarez with Lambert (and Balotelli). It wasn't really bringing in an older player to pass on experience to the younger guys. It was just an inexplicable signing.
That wasnt the case. BR did a few interviews explaining the lambert signing. He tried to get alex sanchez and lambert in. Sanchez to replace suarez and lambert to play in a smaller number of games etc. He signed lambert first and then tried for player after player before getting landed with balotelli

As Rodgers got down to work on his second day of training in Maribor, his first signing was making his own mark back home in Glasgow. Moussa Dembele was speaking to the media at Parkhead where he was outlining his ambition to become the best striker in the world, comments that didn't escape his manager's attention.

It was a bold claim from the 19-year-old who has been pondering a move to Glasgow for several months now. It is clear he has potential to develop, and Rodgers is looking forward to seeing how his journey continues along the Celtic Way.

“That’s a good start, isn’t it,” smiled Rodgers at his new player’s claim. “Listen, he’s coming from a background where he can genuinely say that. He’s came through at PSG and played at every level for France.

“He’s scored goals in a really competitive league. He can now continue that journey here. He’s not saying he’s going to be the best in the world next season.

“But if he takes the development path some have taken and he’s at that level in his mid-twenties, then great. You want to have players with that self-belief. You don’t want misplaced self-belief, but you need that confidence and if you have a will to work along with that, then anything is possible.”

Did he not get quite a massive signing on fee?
Given that we paid Fulham buttons for him, I thought young Moussa might have got a few pennies in his pocket to sweeten the deal.
