My main concern is BR is going to look at £30m he's brought in from CL qualification and ask why virtually nothing has been reinvested in the squad this window to help progress next year? This feeling will only double if Moussa goes with no replacement.

It's very short-term thinking from the Board this window. The Moussa money should be taken if it's over £30m, definitely. But it's the lack of long-term thinking that is a concern. Surely every effort should have been made to keep BR happy this window?

I see where you are coming from but I'm not sure the manager has had any issues with the board to date. In this window we've signed one midfielder, we've all said midfield was the biggest area requiring improvement. It would be nice to get some quality additions bedded in now ahead of CL qualifiers but the January transfer window is notoriously difficult to get the quality of player you want and get value for money for said signing. I actually think we need to sell a few of our midfielders, strikers, defenders to make room in the squad.

IMO the board have backed this manager more than any other in the last 5 years. yes BR said he was disappointed not to have brought more in, in this window but he sounded confident we'll get the business done in the summer. Quotes from BBC

Quote:

We had profiles in mind, but if they are not available, you can't bring them in,
said Rodgers.
Quote:

I'm happy with what I have. Of course I want to improve it, but if it's not in this window, it's fine. We'll do it in the summer.

Brendan is disappointed - a wee bit

Aye I seen his interview. I thought it was quite interesting his choice of words. Normally we hear "we'll try again in the summer" he sounds like he's putting pressure and an expectation on the club to make certain we get the targets in the next window. Saying "if it's not this window, we'll do it in the summer" not try, we will.

Yup, agree. Don't know what the min weekly would be for a 10 million player....beyond our current wage structure and there's the dilemma were we ever to consider pushing the boat oot!.
Sorry, added a wee edit after you posted:

We'll very rarely sign players already established at big European clubs and already on big wages (unless they're on the way out like Sinclair). We'll continue to sign players with something to prove or up and coming stars. Previous signings have shown they can make and instant and major impact. Some, perhaps most, will be moved on at profit before their initial contract expires (Wanyama, Van Dijk, Dembele) and the process will be restarted. We'll supplement that with players from our own youth system (McGregor and Tierney) and the best Scottish players who'll level out a Celtic (Brown, Griffiths, Armstrong). It's actually a very methodical system thats now producing the goods. We have developed a culture of scouting, improving and selling on younger European/African players for major fees. You know who would love to have thus type of system - it takes years to develop.

Rodgers said the other day he is interested in developing a team, and its not about relying on the brilliance of one player. Our progress in the CL is dependent on getting on keeping Rodgers and getting an excellent group of excellent players together at one time and carrying luck. Its cyclical - Ajax in 1995 for example.
Yeah we have been fairly consistent in recruitment and developing some great prospects into great players Wanyama, VVD etc. While I wasn't happy about them being sold on at the time, our financial position wasn't then what it is now. We also got 2 seasons out of both (which would be like a full contract, if Dembele went in this window)

So getting these players and hopefully more Tierney's through our own youth system works is the reality. It's the keeping them bit that I despair at, at times, when I consider the team we possibly could have if we were able to retain these players.

I agree we're never going to splurge 10 mill on a player, even if Dembele was to go for 35. Therefore CL progression and I mean to the last 16, is dependent on continuing to identify and recruit rough diamonds that develop into yer Wanyama's and identifying young "local" talent and growing them through our youth system. Unless though we can keep that quality of player and more than one of them at a time, for long enough, are we going to have a team strong enough to progress beyond the CL stages?

We do need to sell dead wood...but we haven't (yet). Yes, the Board has back him more than others BUT look at the undeniable quality of the guy and what he's brought to Celtic in 7 months.
A notoriously difficult window but we had £30m at our disposal from CL qualification. That is a bumper sum. Don't need to read between the lines much in his comments to pick up he's disgruntled with the lack of action this window. Whatever the events behind the scenes, responsibility for that lies with Lawwell & Board.

No, its not.

You're speculating and looking for worst case scenario due to finance. BR is on record saying players aren't available.

I think you are probably correct.

The odd underlying tone in what he has said is he seems a wee bit irked not to get one or two in. Whether that is board issue(s), players simply not wanting to come, clubs asking for far to much - we will never know. Always the same in the football world we shop in.

Might happen in next few hours but signs dont seem that way.

5/6 players we have that are taking up a chunky wage combined a bit lost for words (they needed punted sharpish). Between them being on big wages, agents not getting/finding them clubs & some prepared to sit and wait it out- frustrating :ffs:

Timing of it shouldn't matter given we have unused lending facilities.

Aye, absolutely outstanding business, but genuinely, did you expect either Dembele or Sinclair to make such an impact as soon as they did.

My point is, to make a serious assault on getting out of the CL group stages, what's the minimum price we would need to pay for a player(s) who's already making an impact for the current team and would be expected to do the same were they to sign for Celtic, with a view to progression in the CL.....what would be the realistic starting price of that ambition.

Sumbdy already suggested 5 - 6 million a player. I think it would have to be double that in todays markets and then min £25k a week, over a 3 year contract. Buying 5 - 6 million pound players and yeah we'll romp the SPFL forever, not convinced it would significantly enhance our chances for last 16 progression.
I don't think making the last 16 is something we aim for. Our main aim each season is to make the groups, bank the cheque and compete with the best over 6 matches.

I think people are getting carried away with our appearance in the CL group stage this year. We need to make the groups consistently first before we can think about taking the next step. Sometimes with a bit of luck and an easier draw than the previous 2 times, we've made it, we might get to the last 16 but the way finances for the top clubs in Europe are going, I just can't see it.

Edit - I read your post wrong the first time, sorry I'm away for a lie down
Making the group stages and European football after Christmas is my aim for Celtic. I'd be absolutely delighted with that for 2017/18.
