According to Jason Burt if the Telegraph West Ham United are not bidding for Celtic's Moussa Dembele and he is not a target for the club. No £20m bid this January.

Quoting limited to 3 levels deep

Not sure what makes you think that 'very few people ever saw him play'.

Plenty of us saw him play every week.

It did look as if there may have been a decent player in there somewhere but unfortunately he never showed it for us, and the relatively big transfer fee has to go down as a waste of money, back when we could ill afford to waste money.

What did we pay for him again was it £1.1m?

Wasn't John Collins our first £1m transfer? I think he was if I remember correctly
Slater wasn't that bad a player really, but he was symptomatic of what was happening at CP at that time. Another guy who "wasn't bad" was Andy Payton, who had a very good goals to game ratio, but these guys were never going to be good enough and helped bring about the demise of the old board and a few years later we had the likes of Henke and TEG playing upfront.

Changed days indeed.

All joking aside, if it is is all wind and piss, it shows that West HAm are a classless little club allowing this sort of keeck to be written on their official website , even with any disclaimers of it wasn't them what wrote it.

It would be easy enough to stop it appearing, I know that much.

At least the Huns have the SMSM do their squirrel work for them !

Whatever the truth of the matter, I really hope he stays for a couple of years at least.

If the prime factor in developing players is simply to sell them on at maximum profit rather than building a team, then we'd be as well giving up football and start following the stock market.

I guess it'll come down to what the player wants, but I hope the club do everything they can to persuade him to stay.

20 or 30 million pounds are not enough. How much did the transfer of martial from monaco to MU cost?
50 million euros, plus 30 million various bonus.....
So, i think 30 million is a joke for a player like Moussa.

Although all ifs and buts, my ideal* scenario would be for him to help us qualify for the CL and stay on until we are no longer in Europe. If our European campaign is similar to this season then by all means cash in on him in 12 months, but I feel we might just be on the verge of something special if we can keep the team together and we keep improving like we have done, coupled with the manager getting more of his own players in then, who knows how far we could go. And the prestige/thrill those nights bring are worth more to me than improving our balance sheet(which would take care of itself if this scenario played out).

*Obviously the perfect ideal is to keep him and win all we contested(again!), but this is my realistic ideal.

Agree that we should be building a team first and foremost - but the reality is that almost all of our players would want to take the move to a bigger/richer league when offered and we need to sell at least some of them for a profit to boost our income.

With a player like Dembele on our hands (assuming he continues to develop) we will soon reach the point where it's a case of let him move to an EPL team and make a profit or (at least) match the wages on offer to him down south if we want to hold on to him.

I was of this opinion for a while. But I actually reckon it does matter who we sell to.

Selling to the likes of Southampton before they bank the big bucks for same player after 2+ seasons is the norm these days

If we can go straight to "top 4" then we are going to be receiving more income in the first place as well as establishing that players can go direct from here to the top level and still perform.

Jim - "top 4" is the wrong phrase, I would suggest all 6 clubs you mentioned are acceptable
I think a case can be made for Dembele to get a game for all of those clubs, except maybe Chelsea and Citeh.
The likes of Giroud, Sturridge, Janssen and even Zlatan, to an extent, have been criticised in the media.

I also think that the bigger clubs down there have watched the likes of VVD and Wanyama progress and maybe want to get our more promising players earlier.

I don't see him going until the Summer though.
TBH the money the big clubs are throwing about down there is so stupid that it probably doesn't make much difference to them if they buy a player directly from us for £12million or wait till he's had a couple of years at Southampton to "prove himself" and buy him from them for £20million+

Dembele could just be special enough to break the mold though - so if anyone in our squad is going to go direct to one of the big guns he's the likely candidate.

Jam back on.

The really depressing thing in all this is the football world we now live in. We get a more than decent, potentially top class player and we might only have him for 6 months. Any of our players who show some decent ability and the fact they've played in the CL means clubs down south and abroad will be sniffing around as they have cash to burn and while it's great to make a huge profit on players it does nothing for the football side as we are in a constant state of transition. The current squad has a really exciting future ahead but it probably won't be allowed to reach its potential as key component parts will be sold and then the lottery begins of trying to replace those players. If this current squad could be together for 2 or 3 seasons with some top class additions it really could make some in roads in Europe but I just don't see it being together beyond the summer sadly.

and this is about the 4th time in about 10 years where if we could have held on to players for a season or two longer I think we could have achieved something special......this team with Forster, Vic, VVD and Denayer....

We have absolutely no need to sell now, or even in the summer unless the money involved gets ridiculous, and by ridiculous I mean more than 1 lot of CL cash. Dembele getting us £30m is more important than selling him for £25m and failing to qualify.

Thankfully we have a manager who knows the value of players and certainly knows what things cost in the EPL.

It would be nice to hold on to him for another 18 months and then get a good fee for him.

But if someone offers us what ever the Club thinks is enough money now and we sell him I won't be crying in to my beer...provided all of the money is reinvested in the team. £30 million has been bandied about in this thread. If that ended up being the figure, that could represent three £5 million players including wages for three years. Or about 20 more Moussas :ph43r:

What I definitely don't want is for us to sell him in the summer either before or during the qualifiers :arrr:

It's not really down to us choosing when to sell though, the players above, most of them if not all of them wanted to leave. Wanyama started making noises about England before the end of the last 16 campaign. VVD practically done the same, expect from the minute he walked in the door. Forster seemed happy to get his move to the EPL when it came due to the England call up situation.

Just now Dembele does seem like he is putting his career before the money and the attraction of the EPL.
