I don't want to go off track here too much, but did anyone as a child in the 70s walk to the games past Stamford.st onto Janefield.st. If you went too early the local apaches would ambush you at the closes as their parents watched from the balconies. I got my tammy nabbed from me and rattled over the head with an iron bar at age 11. Different days now. My assailants probably live in they bought hooses in the area.
I can remember my auld man saying on more than one occasion as we walked behind the old Celtic End that the street down there ( Stanford St) was the worst street in Glasgow
I remember reading an article about Stamford st, which claimed that at least one adult male from every close in the street was in Barlinnie. In the good old days it was marginally ahead of Fruin st and Craigendmuir st as the worst in Glasgow.

Probably best fits in here. There's plans for Glasgow's memorial to the Irish Famine to be placed at St Mary's Church in the Calton.

Apparently an agreement couldn't be reached with the council for a city centre location.
Joke that they couldn't find a place in the city centre and that it's taken so long to do this.

However, I think the biggest memorial to the famine already stands proud in the east end.

Fantastic example of Archie Leitche's work.Thankfully its preserved behind the hideous Brookside style front we have today.
It had to be. It's listed you know.
Is it really? I know there's been some talk on here in the past.

I like the idea that there used to be a wee league table of the most mental streets, where they announced the top 10 in pubs across the city on a Saturday.

Thanks for all the replies re The Grange.

It was some place right enough! As young lads we always, always put plenty change into the never ending supply of 'collection tins'. Wonder what they were collecting for? :ponder:

:ph43r:

Am I correct in saying there was another boozer close by called Camlachie or something?
The Reunion which a drank in many a time and the Grange :boxer:

Reunion, once called the Duke was owned by ex Celts Sandy McMahon and then Jimmy McMenemy.

Pubs at that bit of the Gallowgate going towards Parkhead: Grange, Reunion, Mill Inn, Cross Inn, Reekie Linn, Old Black Bull, Anchor Bar, Straw House

A great wee thread if ye cannae sleep :naught:

Knew a couple of guys who didn't have the good sense to leave the Grange quickly enough after an après match pint some time in the late 70s

Stayed for a couple of hours, got steaming, then got the shampoo kicked out of them for not being "local"

Some place.

Joke right enough.
For all the monuments Glasgow has to slave traders, royals etc etc we cant find a place for a famine memorial in the city centre

I am sure someone will be along soon with a right good excuse reason why though

A good mate of mine lived in Stamford St in the 60s-70s, which would appear to have been its heyday.

He claimed it was the widest street in Glasgow, which seemed like a fair shout*, but he also claimed to sleep with a hot-water-filled Domestos bottle, so I dunno.

(*maybe Mosspark Boulevard?)

From the video I seen I'd say Stamford was wider. Although I'm not overly familiar with moss park boulevard when it was at its best with team tracks I've been told?

A bit off topic so apologies but I was actually wondering about this not long ago – why nothing in Glasgow at all about this.

It was talked about 3/4 years ago but has died a death in terms of media focus or media exposure. Nothing from MSP’s nor councillors last few years at all.

Bearing in mind that it was both sides of certain Christian faiths who perished. It’s pretty sad state of affairs as pointed out above that there is nothing to recognise the suffering of these people as well all know died tens of thousands.

Not sure if any person is in the know who would have a proper knowledge of how it has died away...

Growing up , I was always told that Mosspark Boulevard was the widest street in Glasgow. Certainly had trams going each way on it.
